So after a bit of a sleep in we decided to have a lazy morning and wait until this afternoon to head out. Spent a few hours by the pool, mum not brave enough to get in but I love the water and get in any moment I can.
We headed out about 3pm and stopped at a local cafe for lunch before heading to Placa Espanya. When you come out of the metro, the National Museum is there ahead of you, such a beautiful view up on the hill with the fountains in front. Was disappointed the fountains weren't on though. Made our way up to the Museum, mum was glad there were escalators for some of it. After taking in the view we made our way behind to the Olympic Stadium and museum. I thought I had read it was open till 8pm but unfortunately it closed at 2.30pm so were unable to go in.
We continued our walk to the cable car to get up to Castell de Montjuic. I had read entry was free but then you had to line up for tickets and I was starting to wonder what information I had read because everything was wrong, but then when we got to the window, we were told it was free on Sunday but you needed a ticket. Go figure.
Spent some time wondering around the fort and enjoying the views over the city and ocean, watching the cruise liners come into port. Not the most exciting port that is for sure. We then walked back down the hill (had given mum the choice of getting the cable car down but she chose the walk) and back to the National Museum to get some seats for the La Font Magica show. We were back there by 8.15pm and a crowd was already starting to form even though the show didn't commence until 9.30pm. Managed to find a part of a step for mum to sit on and we waited for the show.
Wait was worth it. Fountains all slowly started turning on, funniest thing was watching the people scramble off the side of the fountain when the water started because they were all getting wet. I don't think they expected the higher up fountains to also start spouting water. Then the light show started with music in the background. At times it looked like big fluffy clouds or even fairy floss depending on the colour.
It was packed by this time and we weren't looking forward to getting the metro because we knew it would be crowded. The show goes for about 25mins and continues till about 11pm. We started making our way down to the metro about 10pm, stopping to keep turning around to watch some more. It was packed inside the metro, took about 10mins or more to get through the gates but then it was only a couple of minute wait for the train which took us back to near the hotel.
We headed back to the tapas bar we ate at last night and this time we were told it was about an hour wait but we decided it was worth the wait. After about 35mins, our name was called and there we were, eating dinner and drinking sangria at 11.30pm at night. Mum never thought she would be doing that. Tried a few different things tonight, including their mini hamburgers and hot dogs. Very cute.
Even though we hadn't left the hotel until after 3pm, we still managed to clock close to 15,000 steps so we did lots of walking. We were glad to reach the hotel and kick our shoes off, also glad we had packed our bags this afternoon before heading out. Was a good last night in Barcelona. 10am train tomorrow to Alicante.
