Able to have a sleep in this morning because due to morning activities, brunch was being served from 10am onwards (early riser breakfast available in the lounge from 6.30am). Our Kayak 101 trip was scheduled for 9am so we layered up and then finished off with our wet weather gear. We were given a small chat about the kayaks and then outfitted up with our lovely "skirt" and PDF. They kayaks are actually on a dock which is lowered down to the water so it is quite easy to get into the kayaks. They adjusted the steering pedals for me (no having to worry about paddling backwards to turn around), fitted our skirts to prevent getting wet and pushed us back into the water.
Lovely hour out on the water. We had anchored off near Lamplugh Glacier so of course, we paddled towards the glacier. Again, so peaceful and quite. Few pieces of ice floating by, hearing the noise chatter of the birds and the rumbling of the glacier. Just magical. Feel like a speck of dust in amongst all that. Headed back to the boat and you glide to the dock and they pull you up and out you get...no need to get wet or worry about tipping the boat over. Mum said she was glad she did it, but won't be doing it again. Bit too much for her shoulders, but if you are going to try it once, you don't get a much better environment then this.
Had brunch set up as a buffet as people are coming and going depending on their activity times, but not a bad place to just sit and enjoy nature. I ended up going for a small nap as it was starting to get drizzly out and the cloud was coming down. Once the last activity group returned, we lifted anchor and started motoring back the way we came. One of the guides gave a talk on John Muir who was instrumental in mapping Glacier Bay. He was also the one that was able to get Yosemite designated as a national park.
We slowed down past Gloomy k*** once again to see if the Mountain Goats had come out to play but they hadn't. Did see a few more humpbacks swim by but no antics from them yet. We travelled into Tidal Inlet on the look out for bears or whales. Saw quite a few Sea Otters float by but that was about it.
Dinner was a choice of Duck or Crab. We chose crab and it was so delicious we were able to enjoy a second one when they offered. After dinner, one of the guides gave a talk on "Rocks" but it was a bit too technical for me so I headed upstairs and decided to enjoy the Hot Tub instead. There was quite a wind whistling down the side but just immersed myself as much as possible in the lovely hot water and watched the sea otters float by. Where we stopped at the National Park Headquaters to drop off our Ranger, there were a couple of bears over on the shore. Good end to the evening.
