Night location: Etihad Airways en route to Sydney
For our last day of our holiday we enjoyed a leisured start with a delicious breakfast at our hotel before doing some final shopping in the streets of the old town. It was a clear and warm morning today and the leaves on the trees are just starting to turn so the canals looked particularly beautiful.
Leaving the old town on a tram we began the David Vincent food tour of Amsterdam! He had researched last night where the city's best frites could be bought so we visited the Albert Cuyp Market and ordered frites with mayonnaise much to his delight. Amber was more excited by the freshly made stroopwafels that followed. A Dutch delicacy, stroopwafels are made by combining two thinly baked waffles with caramel syrup in order to make a large chewy biscuit. Perfection! Following this sweet treat David led the way to Scandinavian Embassy which served one of the best coffees of the trip.
The final stop of the culinary tour was at The Duchess for high tea. We entered the former KAS bank building which is grand in scale and ornamentation which matched the food that was presented with style.
Leaving Europe is always bittersweet as we love travelling in this part of the world due to the complex history, natural beauty and the pretty towns with buildings that date back to the medieval era (and beyond). That being said however, we always look forward to returning home to our friends, family and our Lily dog.
