Night location: Chania, Greece
The next leg of our holiday is as a group of four adults and an adorable baby girl. Gemma, Gareth and Edith flew from Berlin to Heraklion and then drove west in our people mover, while Amber and David flew from Vienna direct to Chania.
The drive west went smoothly until Chania old town which was clearly too complicated for the GPS. Gareth was directed down a number of pedestrianised streets and sometimes the roads would come to an abrupt end with either a chain or a bollard blocking cars. After some scary reversing it was decided that the car would be parked in the equivalent of a small shopping centre car park, and the rest of the trip would be done on foot!
A happy reunion was had at the entrance of our beautiful hotel which is a restored 16th Century mansion of a Venetian nobleman. During the restoration, Roman walls dating to 1st Century CE were uncovered and are now displayed under the glass floor of the foyer. After an early dinner we walked through some of the old laneways and found a large open square with a church, a few restaurants and a gelato shop. What we have seen so far looks really lovely so we're excited to explore more tomorrow!
