Night location: Vienna, Austria
Today was a transit day for us as we bade farewell to Italy and flew to Austria. We drove from Santa Maria Navarrese to Olbia on the inland road that wound over the Supramonte to the high country of Sardinia. The only stop was at the hilltop town of Nuoro, once a centre of banditry, but in the last forty years it has been transformed into a pleasant town to live, work and visit. We walked along the Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi and enjoyed a cappuccino at one of the local cafes.
As we drove towards Olbia Aeroporto a thunderstorm broke in the mountains with heavy rain and fork lightning piercing the hillside. Fortunately after returning the car we were able to walk to the terminal in only light rain.
Our hotel in Vienna is one block away from the wide pedestrian zone in the city centre, so after checking in we walked up to Saint Stephen's Cathedral as the sun was setting. For dinner David was very excited to have Wiener Schnitzel served with a delicious potato salad.

Althea Halliday There must have been a bit of a twinge when you left Italy. But then, there you are in Vienna in all its cultural splendour. And what about those cakes! My word! xx
