Fresh from the Butcher
One juiced out iPod, a bag of German biscuits, too many rounds of sh*thead (card game for those of you not down with the kids) and a long ferry journey later and I was in Uruguay.
I have never had any real desire to visit Uruguay, but its proximity to Buenos Aires made it an ideal way to spend a sunny Sunday.
With only six precious hours to spend exploring we promptly wasted one fruitlessly trying to hire a golf buggy to tour the town. Only at the end of the hour did we discover that yes, even golf buggies require a drivers license. Unfortunately mine was safely tucked up in my dorm room locker back in Buenos Aires - doh!
So, sin transportation and after an extremely dubious seafood spaghetti, (whole baby octopus being the only seafood on my plate - eugh!), I eventually explored Colonia on foot.
Winding cobblestone streets, neat lawns, quaint cottages and cute restaurants sum up Colonia. In short, its one of the prettiest towns I have experienced on my whole trip.
It took only an hour to fully explore, and so we spent the rest of the afternoon taking full advantage of the beautiful restaurants, enjoying locally produced cheeses and yummy home made wine in the sunshine until it was time to make the ferry ride home to Buenos Aires.
Uruguay is considered the Switzerland of S.America and from what little I saw of the country I would have to agree. Relaxed vibe, very friendly and hospitable people, and a picture perfect backdrop. It was a great break from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires.
