Palompon, Leyte, Philippines
Palompon is 124 Kilometer (road distance) from Tacloban City, 66 kilometers from Ormoc City.
I was invited to stay overnight by a friend I met in Manila and she brought me to her beach resort. The beach was kinda rocky and it's not advisable that you walk around barefoot. But I must say the water is clean, clear and perfect for snorkeling. I regret to say that I didn't have the equipment that time but I had a smashing time swimming and drinking the local wine they call "tuba".
I was told stories about the island and it's culture, there was this story that fascinated me. My friend pointed me to cave that was once the hiding place of the famed Yamas***a treasure. It is the name given to the alleged war loot stolen in Southeast Asia by Japanese forces during World War II and hidden in caves, named after the Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamas***a nicknamed "the tiger of Malaya". Anyways, the story that was passed on by her elders is that philippine treasure hunters Rogelio Roxas and former president Ferdinand Marcos hired several locals to explore the cave and was succesful in extracting golds and gems. There was death during the extraction due to gas that was probably laid out by the Japs to protect the treasures which the locals believed at that time as bad omen. The story maybe a legend, fact or fiction I really don't know. But it did add color to my vacation!
