(D) Today’s plan was just to wander, as we’d really crossed everything off our list, so after a yummy scrambled omelette breakfast, picnic goodies packed, we headed out of town with the aim of just following L roads wherever they took us. When it came to an intersection a quick round of Rocks, Papers, Scissors (with me being left and Liane being right) decided which way we’d turn.
I have absolutely no idea where we went but it was lovely wherever it was! At one stage we came across what we think was snow on the ground but neither of us being experts in the field it could well have been hail residue or even maybe sleet….. does sleet gather on the ground though?! Who knows, regardless it looked amazing so of course the odd photo or two was taken.
We had quite a few laughs along the way wondering if we were indeed on L roads or perhaps had wandered on to T roads…. Incidentally there is no such thing really but we’ve dubbed L roads lanes and figured there should be T roads for tracks. At one stage we reassured one another that even though we were clueless as to where we were we would eventually come out somewhere…. Liane quickly quipped that it would probably be Dublin or maybe even Northern Ireland, which totally cracked me up!
Though we discussed possibilities as to where our adventure would end up neither of us had predicted we’d come out where we did which was Doolin…. We both went “WHAT???!!!” – honestly we totally need Gwendoline, our human compass!
Doolin is where Liane bought her gorgeous maroon Aran cardigan the other day and though I’d been restrained then and resisted temptation, I’d decided I did really want another scarf so we popped into another Sweater Shop next door to where she had bought hers.
I purchased a gorgeous Irish green hand woven in Kerry scarf that I love, oh and also some fabulous knitted socks as I’d been envious of Liane’s that she’d gotten. Liane and I both say these socks remind us of our Gran as she used to knits socks for us!
I had asked Liane at the beginning of the day to remind me to “step away from the camera” as it’s quite a chore to go through 600 photos to choose the best of the day but I seem to be addicted. My name is Debra and I’m a photoholic…. She duly reminded me early in the piece (I think I took 50 before the end of the first road out of town – and yes I’m exaggerating but unfortunately only slightly!) which meant I started out quite restrained but somehow I lost the plot in the middle somewhere. Everywhere is just so incredibly gorgeous that it’s hard to resist!
Tomorrow we leave this beautiful area….. and go to another one!!!
(L) Not much more to say really .... The day was spent just driving wherever the road took us - well not the road really was more the Rocks, Paper and Scissors that determined our course. No doubt the ever infallible "Jane" would have been horrified at the roads we traversed but the journey was the priority not the destination. We had such a wonderful day taking so many roads less travelled and as has been mentioned before, I'm sure, there is really no need to go looking for crumbled ruins of castles, churches and towers as they most truly are found down every lane and you will surely see many when just wandering aimlessly around the countryside - the history is just amazing..... well at least compared to us Australian "youngins" where 200 years is the most history we have to boast!
When we got to Doolin we stopped at the pub for Hot Chocolate as is evidenced by the photos! Goodness only knows how we ended up in Doolin as both Deb and I were under the impression we were headed in the other direction!!
Our host, George, knocked on the door just before 6 to see how we were getting on. We thought it would have been nicer if he'd popped in the day we arrived, or even the next day, as there were things we might have asked him but ended up sorting ourselves.... the dryer (or lack of one) being one! This cottage is actually very nice, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, kitchen/lounge/dining area but does lack a few things that would make it fabulous. Little things, admittedly, like washing up scourer, dishcloth, powder for the washing machine and dishwasher, spare toilet paper, salt, pepper..... you know... little things!! When we stayed at Broadway in the Cotswolds in 2013 our self contained cottage had all that and way more, oil, tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, orange juice and a lovely basket with champagne, biscuits, chocolate etc so yes, we did notice the difference. However, having said that we only paid €70 per night + electricity (which we have NO idea what we'll be paying) so yes it is a great price.
Just about all packed up and ready to go.... moving on to our last stop in Ireland (well almost the last)!!
