Where in the World is Dan O?
We started out the day attending Morning mass in St. Patrick's Catholic Church. It was a beautiful church but the mass was held in a small corner of the church. European mass is little different from American mass. The mass only lasted 30 minutes but it was very cool. Looking around the church was amazing. The structural design along with the hand crafted pews held so much history.
Afterwards we had finished a lot earlier then we had predicted. We had plenty of time to catch the coastline tour on a double-decker bus. The big attraction was the chance to see Malahide Castle. The tour guide was very amusing and he also sang to us some Irish songs. We passed numerous classic Irish housing and some old castles. One of the very cool sites on the way to the castle was a small church that has been up since the 1100 ad. The church is still used for services on Sunday. We continued up to Malahide Castle, which was in a family line since the Norwegians came and conquered Ireland in the dark ages. The castle was first built with one giant column with small wholes for protection from invaders and the weather. As the years progressed the castle was built on to till the castle you see at present. The last duke who owned Malahide castle died mysteriously overseas, he left the castle to his sister along with all his dept. A way to pay off the dept she opened the castle to tours and made the money to pay off dept. She later went and visited a relative in morocco I believe. She came back to Ireland a different person. She sold the castle to the Irish government and then moved and bought a nice piece of land and is living out there. She is 89 I believe now. The castle was amazing but I couldn't take any pictures inside. It is said to be haunted too. I wanted to meet the ghost but it was in the restricted zone.
On the way back, we went along the coast line and viewed the harbors of Ireland. We took an unexpected detour on the bus and went up to another castle/home where buses were not allowed. This castle/home has a rich story. One day a lady pirate captain came to the house to pay a visit to the family. She called during dinner time and at that time it was customary to lock the front door for dinner. She became furious and on returning to her ship she came upon the family's only son, who was returning from the city after shopping. She kidnapped him and set sail on the open ocean. A she returned to Ireland a year later, during that time she became fond of the boy. She sent a runner up to the house to tell the family that their son was alive and she would like to pay a visit. If the door is locked she will be gone again for another year. The father, excited and amazed that his son was alive stated that from this day forward at dinner the door will always remain open in honor of her. She exclaimed when she arrived that for her life and afterwards no harm would befall the family.
After the tour we walked over to the main shopping area and ran into many fans going to the big rugby match happening that day. So many colors and the whole town were into it. That night we had our hearty pasta dinner and met some new friends from Australia. Jodi and Warren have been traveling around Europe for 3 months and will be traveling another 7. They just finished their graduate work and are enjoying their engagement around the world. I envy them. They were so cool.
The next day Warren and Jodi invited us to travel with them to the prison of Dublin in their car. There was a lot of history of revolutions inside those walls. It was quite amazing. We had a great time hanging out with our Aussie friends. Later we went and visited Dublina, a museum of Ireland that tells the story of the Viking era and dark ages. This is where I found my Halloween costume of an Irish king. We finished that day just relaxing because the next day was full of traveling once again.
