Where in the World is Dan O?
Traveling to Greece was so tiring. Say GOODBYE to almost all English. It was very difficult to communicate, harder than I imagined. But everywhere in Greece it said, Welcome to Greece, Let your Myth Begin. Our first hostel we arrived to was in the ghetto. We had to walk to it from the train station at 10 at night. Man, talk about hairy situation. But we met some cool Koreans and the hostel had some ok accommodations. They gave us a free shot of ouzo (Greek liqueur) and free internet (very rare). The next morning was an early one to catch a speed ferry to the island of Santorini. We were lucky but we had the hardest time trying to convert distances. The guy told us that boat was 500 meters away, I'm here thinking, Ok that's like 100 yards right? We ran/walked around the whole harbor to find our tiny boat.
In Santorini, our vacation began. We ran into little problems from the start because we lost the contact sheet of our hostel (they offered to pick us up from the harbor). Once at our hostel we were able to relax in an air-conditioned room. Talk about a climate change, from rain in Dublin to sweating up a storm in Greece. We took a shower and still sweated when we got out. It reminded me a lot of Florida with the humidity. The rest of the day was spent relaxing and strolling around the shops around Santorini. They are known for their jewelry and were priced so. For I had the best Greek Salad I have ever had. I was in heaven. It was at this time we realized that our stomachs had shrunk; a tiny salad filled me up! I debated renting a moped but decided against it because I canceled my insurance for driving back in the states. They were only 15 dollars a day but it was crazy, mo-ped would take on busses with death wishes. That night we enjoyed some tasty desserts and watching the sunset in Santorini. I was in heaven. Night is so beautiful there.
The next day we ventured down to the beach and I was disappointed. It's a pebble beach and the rocks were incredibly hot. My blisters had just popped on the rocks and when I jumped in the sea to cool off, the blisters stung so bad. But I had a blast in the water, splashing around. I brought some of the interesting volcanic rocks back with me. I loved the water there, so blue and clear.
Afterwards I dried off and strolled down the beach for about 3 miles. It is such an interesting sight to see such a black pebble/rocky beach. For some reason they have tons of stray dogs on Santorini. I met a couple friends there and they followed me for my little trek. Named them Shaggy and Skippy. When I returned to the hostel I met up with Alie and we headed to the north part of the island for the sunset, but just as we got there my camera decided to quit working. This camera has given me such headaches on this trip! Walked around the shops there and saw similar jewelry but some other cool shops. There must have been 7 or 8 weddings there when we were there because we kept on running into different grooms and brides. Not a bad place for the pictures if you ask me. We headed back home to enjoy a beer of mythos and afterwards I called back home.
Friday was a travel day again. This one was a lot worse than our other travels. We didn't book the ferry trip back to Greece. We went to the docks early and found one seat on a fast ferry; Alie took to get our hostel reservations set up. And I jumped on the slow boat. OH MY GOSH, 9 hours on a boat, I wanted to shoot myself. I couldn't talk to any Greeks because many didn't understand English, or at least the ones on the boat. Since I booked my spot late, I didn't have a seat. So the whole trip I cruised around the boat trying to find a seat but when I got up to get food or bathroom I would loose my spot. Traveling alone will be hard later. I did become a little sick because of the kids/brats around me who would jump near and on me accidentally, sneezing. Sorry, still little upset about that situation.
After arriving in the dock, I made my way to the hostel where I met up with Alie at midnight and slept fairly well.
