I think it's fair to say that Kota Buru won't be featuring highly in our list of best places we visited, but it was only one night and one day.
It didn't start well as the guesthouse we planned on staying at was horrible and populated by oddballs who looked like they live there. There are a surprising number of people who seem to live in guesthouses as their permenant place of residence, nearly all of them are middle aged loners who really belive that they are the true embodiment of fitting in in Asia - this generally means finding an unattractive local bride twenty years younger than you and drinking Tiger beer until it cmes out of your ears.
But I digress. So two hours of walking around in the heat and finding nothing of interest (this is after we found a hotel) and we made it to the tourist information centre. The bloke who ran it was cheerful, but looked like he had a murderous dark side just underneath, he directed us to a cultural show later that day which we dragged ourselves to. As it turned out we were the only people there, when we arrived the locals putting on the displays were sat around doing nothing and he made them all jump up and perform for just us two.
It was a bit embarrassing really as we didn't feel we could leave and the displays didn't look very cultural. The first was basically keep-uppy in a big group and using a wooden ball (in a basket weave design), they let me join in and I didn't disgrace myself too much. The second was some drum beating music, which was good but went on a bit, it was saved really by two of them who I thought looked like the Asian Hale and Pace, they were getting into it so we just watched them. We were also press ganged into having a go which was good fun. The third display was supposed to be kite flying but when we got there the kite fliers had all gone home which made our guide go a funny shade of purple.
He ushered us into a display by Thai people celebrating a week of Thainess in the area, Rhiannon bought some stuff and we chatted to the bloke that ran it, but we were the only westerners there and felt a bit out of place as it was more of a business meeting and we were there in shorts and t-shirts.
That was it, we finished our cultural evening with a trip to KFC and watched America's Got Talent on telly, which ended with the Hoff singing his UK number three hit 'Jump in my Car'. He's still got it.
