After our stressful time at Whale island where we managed to pretty much do.......nothing, apart laugh at Will and Jonny after the kayak incident (see whale island journal entry)We soon got back to reality when we arrived in Saigon. The only thing we knew about Saigon was that it was mentioned on the film 'apoclyse now', this really showed how cultured we were. But we soon realised Saigon had quite a bit to offer.
We arrived about 5 in the morning (a very silly time!) and instead of going to sleep we'd thought we go for some breakfast and then straight out for some sightseeing. Our first tourist destination were the Cu Chi tunnels which turned out to be pretty fun. It was basically a tunnel system the Vietcong set up in the Vietnam war so when ever they came under attack they hid in these tunnels, overall the tunnels stretched to about 2.5kms and if you look at the pics the tunnels are pretty dam small! It was quite clever becasue they built small enough so the Vietcong could fit in them but not big enough for the Americans to fit.......not that the Americans are fat, its just Vietnamese are very small!
This was also the place where we both got pretty excited becasue we were able to play with some guns! Our choice of gun.....M16...........5 bullets.........one shooting range.....$5........totally worth it!
We also visited the war remnants musuem which turned out to be pretty emotional for some people, we even had girls crying. It was pretty gruesome, showing the realities of the Viatnam war, and it didn't really put us in a good mood when leaving the museum, and took a while to get over some of the sick pictures.
Our last night in Saigon also turned out to be the last night we would spend as a group so we went for a meal and few drinks to say goodbye to some people. The meal we had turned out to be a 'traditional' restaurant and so of course we had to try out the 'traditional' cusine. This did unfortunately include eating scorpion,rat,snake..........and goats penis! We won't go into detail of what it tastes like becasue well we don't want to gross you out! But it was an experience, but one i hope i don't have to experience again!
Saigon came to an end and this also meant our trip round Viatnam was coming to an end. It had been an incredible first 2 weeks and we were hoping for more of the same in Cambodia..........Keep checking our journal entries to find out what Camodia was like and we hope everyone is ok back home.....speak soon.....FilandWil
