Alice Shipton's Grandmother was Emily Martin (1822-1911), and Emily Martin's brother was called Reuben Martin (1827-1910). Their mutual family tree is shown above. They were probably a close family, as Reuben Martin lived with his sister well into adulthood; he's recorded as living with with Emily and her husband James Shipton in the 1861 census when Reuben was over 30. Alice's father Reuben Martin Shipton was obviously named after his uncle, Reuben Martin. Reuben Martin married and had a daughter, Hannah Eliza Martin (1852-1935). Hannah Martin married a George Silas Guy (1835-1912). Family legend has it that Guy was something to do with the Guy Motors, who manufactured lorries, and that apparently was the source of his wealth, but that cannot be true because he was clearly wealthy well before the Lorry Company got going. In fact, he died two years before the company was even founded. In any event, although the Guys did all seem to come from Nottingham and may be related, there is no known familial link between George Silas Guy and Sidney Guy who founded Guy Motors. The important aspect to this is that the Guys who were related to the Shiptons by marriage were none the less wealthy, very wealthy indeed. In the next picture, the significance of this is explained in detail.
