"The good news is we will be riding on the Autobahn for the next two days," says Greg this sunny Monday morning. Then he says "The bad news is we will be riding on the Autobahn for the next two days!"
Good news because the roads are fantastic and you can cover lots of kilometres in a short time. Bad news for Greg because his concentration levels need to be spot on to negotiate the huge number of unpredictable trucks, the roadworks and speeding cars - just to keep us alive. Bad news for Kerrie as photo opportunities from the back of the bike are limited. Kerrie also has to be quiet so as not to disturb Greg's concentration - a real challenge for Kerrie, as anyone who knows her well would agree!
We left Nurnberg early - 7:30 am - as it was going to be a hot day and we have discovered the best way to cope with the heat is to travel early. The only problem with this today was that we couldn't check in to our Guesthouse until 4 pm. No worries, we would just stop often - lucky there were a few McDonalds along the way.
This plan worked really well and we arrived in Windhagen a few minutes before 4pm. We were greeted by our host Judith and our room is great. Windhaven is another of those convenient stopping spots to get us back to the Hook of Holland ferry on Thursday night. After a beer from the mini-bar and a Greggy dinner (whatever you have on hand eaten in your room) we happily relaxed in the German countryside for the night.
Another short trip for Tuesday, only about 200km to Arnhem in the Netherlands - another bridge story is looming!
This is our third visit to Arnhem (one could say we rather like it) but on both previous visits we have stayed in a hotel on the outskirts of town. This time we are staying right in town. Our Holiday Inn overlooks the weird sculpture of Feestaardvarken - a giant orange ardvaark lying on its back.
You might be asking what is so special about Arnhem that we would visit three times, they don't even have a MotoGP here! But they do have a bridge, a very special Bridge!
Do the words "A Bridge Too Far" ring any bells?
In September 1944 during the Second World War the Allies executed Operation Market Garden, the largest parachute drop in history and the British were given the task of securing the bridge at Armhem. Stiff resistance was encountered from the Germans and eventually the British ran out of ammunition and had to surrender.
The original Arnhem bridge was destroyed in October 1944 as a result of Operation Market Garden and was rebuilt and opened in 1948. It was renamed the John Frost Bridge in 1977 after the British Lieutenant Colonel who led his regiment onto the bridge while attempting to capture it during the Battle of Arnhem. Lieutenant Colonel Frost was killed on the bridge and his body was never recovered. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
If you haven't seen it yet, get hold of the 1977 movie 'A Bridge Too Far' to find out the full story. The movie has a cast of huge Hollywood stars such as Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Robert Redford, Dirk Bogard and Anthony Hopkins - just to name a few.
Our last real riding day in Europe is a very short one - 130 km. The day was cool and there was rain forecast but not till after lunch. We set off about 10am and arrived in The Hague around noon and we're lucky enough to be able to check in to our hotel 3 hours early.
We spent the afternoon walking - only 9.3 km according to Kerrie's phone app! The Hague doesn't appear to be a big tourist destination as we could only find one souvenir shop and 2 churches in the centre of town! We still need to check out the Peace Palace, the Binnenhof and Scheveningen Pier on our way out of town in the morning.
Tomorrow afternoon we ride the last 20 km to the Hook of Holland to catch the overnight ferry back to Harwich. Then we have a one hour ride to Felixstowe to drop off the bike for shipping home.
We still have a few days in the UK but we will be in a car - you will have to wait and see what we have planned.
