After leaving Newquay - wait for it - IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE, we started our journey towards our bike pick up next Monday. Breakfast was in Wadebridge in the Route 39 Diner - American style with a view out the window of a surf shop advertising Billabong and Quicksilver clothes. With the sunshine, the diner and the surf shop we were not quite sure where we were!
Back on the road, reality set in as we navigated narrow country roads on the way to Port Isaac. This small fishing village is where the TV show Doc Martin is set - very pretty but the Doc must have been on a house call as we didn't see him.
Further up the road we stopped at another seaside village called Tintagel. This village was the home of someone apparently even more famous than Doc Martin! The cliffs are supposedly the location of Camelot so King Arthur once roamed these cliffs! There is not much left of the castle and it was too far for us oldies to wander out for a closer look. After long distance photos of the castle remains and a quick visit to the new Camelot Hotel we drove on.
Our 1997 bus trip had us spend a night in Barnstaple so we decided that another visit there would be good for lunch. We wandered around the indoor markets checking out the second hand offerings. We didn't recognise anything from our last visit but the pastie and chocolate eclair for lunch were delicious.
Our stop for the night was just south of Weston-super-Mare, another seaside resort. We drove around town for a few photos and then headed to our hotel. The Webbington Hotel and Spa was about 5km out of town on the side of a hill in the little village of Webbington. What a great find! The hotel is in the middle of nowhere but had a great indoor heated pool and lovely restaurant - a very comfy spot to have a drink in the sunshine and spend the night.
After a great night's sleep we set off for a drive through the Cotswolds, an 800 square mile renowned for its natural beauty. We spent a bit of time here in 2015 and loved it. First stop was Cirencester just for a leg stretch and to snap a couple of photos. We decided to keep our eye open for a laundrette as we have run out of sweet smelling clothes. Mission achieved just 5 km down the road at Moreton-in Marsh. While the clothes were washing we found a lovely little cafe called 'Tilly's' for lunch. With tummys full and clean clothes we headed off. We expected to see some thatched cottages but did not see any!
As we drove passed signs to Stratford-on-Avon, Warwick, Coventry and Hinckley we reminisced about other trips but soon returned to reality as we approached Leicester, our destination for the night.
One of our travel ambitions for the UK has always been to watch a Premier League Football game live - TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT! We have secured 2 tickets to watch Leicester City (aka the Foxes) play Southampton at King Power Stadium in Leicester. Our accommodation is the South Fork Guest House only about 3 km from the stadium - too far to walk in this heatwave - hottest April day in the UK for the last 70 years - 24 degrees!
We booked a Uber to deliver us to the football, had a great chat with our Sri Lankan driver. The area around the stadium was buzzing - people drinking in a bar, BMX stunt riders perforning, a lady juggling a soccerball, the team mascot and shoppers in the Leicester City merchandise store. We chatted to a couple of Southampton supporters before checking out the merchandise in the shop. After a hamburger for dinner we went inside to find our seats about 40 minutes before the start of the game.
Both teams were on the field doing drills and we enjoyed the atmosphere while we waited. Leicester City is 8th on the ladder at the moment but they won the Premiership in 2014 - beat all the big teams quite unexpectedly! Unfortunately they have not maintained their winning ways and have struggled to afford high profile players. Southampton are 3rd from the bottom of the ladder - in the relegation zone. There are only 3 or 4 games left to play so it is not looking good for Southampton.
We were seated in the corner behind the goal posts but still had a great view of the game. Beside us were the very vocal Southampton supporters who had travelled for the game. They pretty much sang for the whole game and only sat down at the half time break. As they are known as the Saints - can you guess what they were singing? Correct - When the Saints Go Marching In!
The game started with us being amazed at the skill level of the players, they can do things with a football that our Brisbane Roar would dream of doing. The game, unfortunately, was not particularly exciting with the score being 0-0 but we really didn't mind - we were at our first Premier League game after all!
After the game we followed the crowd out of the stadium and decided to walk the 3 km back to the guest house as the night was really balmy. Showers needed before bed.
