We only have one day in Copenhagen and we had lots to see!
With our bike tucked away safely in the hotel car park we caught the train, only 4 stops into town. We met up with Chris who had elected to stay in a hostel in a six bed mixed dorm right in town.
Our first task was to secure our transport for the day. We purchased a combined Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus and Boat Cruise. We figured that this, with a bit of walking thrown in, would be our best option.
The bus took us passed many of the high end hotels located right in town - way out of our budget! Our first Hop-Off was at Nyhavn, a canal and entertainment district. The canal is lined with colourful buildings, numerous restaurants and old wooden boats tied up alongside. We purchased ice-cream and waffles before walking to our next destination.
Many of you would know that a very beautiful princess lives in a grand palace in Copenhagen - and she is Australian! So we headed up the street to visit Crown Princess Mary and her handsome Crown Prince Frederik. They were at home, we know this because the flag was flying at their house, but they didn't come out to say gidday! Never mind! We did hang around long enough to watch the changing of the guard (I think Greg was secretely hoping that if we hung around long enough he might get a glimpse of Mary). After this we walked over to see The Marble Church and Fountain.
After rejoining the bus we headed towards another VERY famous Copenhagen landmark. Copenhagen was the home of Hans Christian Anderson - of Fairy Tale fame. One of his stories is The Little Mermaid and a statue of the mermaid is by the waterside at Langelinie where many cruise ships visit. Today there were 5 ships in town but we were there with hundreds of other tourists to see the mermaid. She has been sitting on the rock since 1913 and has been beheaded 3 time since being unveiled. Lucky for us she had her head on today! We wandered along the water's edge and were lucky enough to see a family of swans (The Ugly Duckling story) happily swimming near the rocks.
Back on the bus, we continued our trip around the city until we were near the middle again. We then walked passed Copenhagen City Hall and visited Christiansborg Palace, the home of Denmark's Parliament. Then it was time for the canal cruise part of our day.
The cruise took us passed The Opera House and The Black Diamond - two modern architectural wonders overlooking the canals. We sailed under low, narrow bridges and were even involved in a traffic accident - boat traffic that is as a big yellow boat ran in to our small low canal boat - no injuries were reported but harsh words were exchanged by the two skippers before we all went on our way. We even got another view of the cruise ships and The little Mermaid - this time from the waterside.
Back at the wharf we decided to check out Stroget - the shopping street! We walked by several shops that displayed the Royal Warrant and had a good look around the Lego shop. An Italian restaurant was chosen for dinner where Greg and Chris both ordered Mexican food - go figure! We then walked back to Chris's Hostel to watch the World Cup football - Denmark v Peru. Denmark won 1 nil so Copenhagen would be party central tonight.
We then caught the train back to our hotel and shared the carriage with several bicycles - I guess even the bikes have to get home somehow.
Our day in Copenhagen had us walk over 9km, travel by train, bus and boat and we now have another sticker for the bike!
