Just wanted to send out a quick post before we head into the Colombian jungle. How's that for dramatic :) Yesterday we went to a nearby national park to hike and try sleeping in hammocks in preparation for the Indiana Jones of treks - Ciudad Perdida - The Lost City. It's 6 days and 5 nights in the jungle sleeping in mosquito net covered hammocks. Sounds appealing, right? We're not 100% sure yet if it's something we really want to do or just something we want to say we did...
The thing is, our little hammock test last night - not so successful. In fact, I don't think I'll ever look at another hammock the same way again. It was a gorgeous setting though - a rustic thached roof high on a hill overlooking the caribbean ocean. Unfortunately the ocean breezes were more like hurricane level gusts, and no one, not even Josh, the sleeper of all sleepers, got much shut-eye. A stomach sleeper myself, I finally found a comfortable position - half back half side, mostly head tilt - around 2am. I had completely dehydrated myself to avoid the middle-of-the-night bathroom walk but my bladder never got the message and was working full throttle.
But despite our unsuccessful hammock turn we've decided to go ahead with the big trek starting tomorrow. That's Thursday Mom :) The Lost City is home to Tayrona Indians and supposedly untouched by modern urban living. It's remote, lush forest, only reachable by foot, and so off we go. We´re excited to get out of the city and only midly concerned about the mosquitos, crazy heat, unproven food and water sources, strenuous climbs and of course, more hammock nights!
