Yesterday at Iguazu Falls was probably my most favorite day of the trip so far. We got up and out of the hostel by 10am, which is actually a pretty decent accomplishment for us. We didn't beat the tour groups to the falls but managed to get in some peaceful hiking anyways. It's hard to describe the enormity and beauty of these waterfalls, so I'll just let you look at the photos.
Other than the falls there's not too much to do here in Iguazu, on the three borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. It does boast the "best hostel in the country" according to Lonely Planet. It has a nice pool, and according to some other travelers, a pretty decent all you can eat $10 meat buffet, but it was booked up by the time we rolled into town.
Instead we tried our first private apartment - a little more space, off the beaten path, and our very own BBQ grill out front. We shared the place with some friendly mosquitos and cucarachas, and had a few close encounters with the neighborhood dogs and cats along the way, especially the night we grilled.
By the time we got the carbon coals heated it was almost 11pm - perfect for an Argentine dinner. Just as the steaks were ready we looked up to see four dogs peering around the corner - apparently it was their dinnertime too. We were forced to get all food chain on them to protect our prized meat, and managed to run them off, but in the end it was a tiny kitten that got the best of us. That thing had persistence, cuteness, and whineiness on its side, and managed to come away with a decent cut of our bife de chorizo.
Now we're getting ready to head to Brazil on our second overnight bus ride. If it's anything like our first overnight ride from Buenos Aires - fold down beds, plenty of cafe, and excellent films like Blades of Glory and Miami Vice - I'll be one happy backpacker.
