We arrived at Waylailai Eco Haven resort on Waylailai Island late in the afternoon after another bumpy boat ride. We were shown to our room which we shared with a Swiss and a Finnish girl. The room was the most spacious so far which a thatched roof and our own ensuite bathroom.
Our dinner was a buffet style with a random mixture of dishes. Everyone was friendly and we got to know the other travellers. Post dinner we were entertained by the Fijians and learnt the Bula Dance and the Broom Dance. We ended the evening by enjoying some more Kava before retiring to bed.
Unfortunately on our first full day on the island the weather was very miserable. We attempted to chill in the hammocks but it was rather cold, so we had a pre lunch nap instead. The afternoon was not much more eventful, but we spent a couple of hours with some locals weaving a bookmark and making a shell anklet. The evening's dinner was a traditional Fijian feast which we ate with our hands. After dinner we joined in with yet some more locals from the village to enjoy a cup or two of Kava.
Our second morning was the most fun and a lot more exciting than the previous day ..as it was time to swim with sharks. After collecting our snorkel gear and experiencing an extremely painful boat ride we arrived at the reef. We tumbled off the boat and we saw some sharks almost immediately! There were around 6 altogether and it was very cool being able to float on top of the reef with the sharks below! Another one ticked off the bucket list!
After a less bumpy boat ride we arrived back on the island! We spent the rest of the afternoon sunbathing and reading, and also having a sneaky look around a fancy wooden hut house on the island! Slightly less impressive on the inside!
Our buffet dinner was followed by yet more fijan dancing, and we practised the 'Bula' dance along with playing musical chairs and musical statues!! We felt like we were back in primary school, but was good fun!
The weather was rather disappointing again on our final day on Waylailai, so we spent the most of this day reading and chatting to the other backpackers! Next stop - Beachcomber Resort!!
