Fremantle
We didnt get to see the Bob Marley tribute band as I didn't feel very good. So we had a walk down to the beach and for some fish and chips and to bed for an early night. The next day John just left me in bed and headed out for a couple of things- a bacon and eg mcmuffin and the jobs papers. He didn't come back to the hostel for hours and when he eventually came back he was soaked as it was throwing it down- turned out the dafty took a wrong turn and had been lost for ages. He didnt get his bacon and egmcmuffin he had to settle for a hungry jacks (Australias very poor attempt at Burger King) burger. For the next couple of days I was feeling rubbish so we didn't really do much! We checked Fremantle out, which we loved its a brilliant little suburb. It has quite a lot of old building s there and as lots of little cafes and pubs and when its sunny there the place just comes alive with street performers and families.
By the Monday we were sick of the hostel! It was minging- really there were loads of flies around the kitchen the showers were mouldy and the people were really unfriendly! So we decided we would move hostels!
Well Shiver Me Timbers
We had heard really good things about this hostel called Pirates so we headed there to see if there was any beds free. The place was fully booked but we were offered a space in the corridor were they had set a couple of beds with a curtain in front of them for some privacy. So I guess your thinking- oh the poor things they headed back to their horrible hostel- well your right but only to pick up our bags to move into the corridor in Pirates! It was actually alright, you got left alone and there was enough room and Pirates is the best hostel ever!
When we checked in we were taken to the courtyard were a big group was having a drink with the owner Vaughan. He gave us some free drinks and we all sat around and had a giggle. Pirates is by far the best hostel we have stayed in- its certainly no the flashest, not the cleanest, or the cheapest- but it always has cool people staying there and everyones pretty sociable! We had planned to get shared accomodation but fell in love with the place and it was at this point Pirates became our home for the next 2 months! We had a few different rooms, we stayed in the corridor for a few days , moved into seperate rooms and then moved into the same room- which was full of stinky snoring boys and then we moved into a room where we had a double bed and 3 other beds in.
Ah No time to work again!
For those of you who were on the edge of their seats wondering whether we got jobs and got ourselves of the noodle diet... well we did. We found crazy Australians who thought it would be a good idea to hire us- I know wonders will never cease!
John went to work for an Irish guy in quite a random job- making boat sails and outside canopies. He got quite a cushy number as Noel came to collect him and drop him off at the door every day and loved to stand around talking all day. John got pretty bored of this though and found something with longer hours. He then went to work for Sea to Summit, an outdoor leisure products supplier in the warehouse. He liked this job and the people he worked with so all was good there!
John had the right idea, to turn his hand at new things and get out of the boring old office. I on the other hand decided to stick with the boring old office and went to work for Clougha big construction company in their Recruitment Department. It was pretty boring but the company were pretty generous with free drinks and it was nice to sit at the other side of the interview table! I cant say I really picked up any tips for future interviews, the callibre and proffesionalism of West Australian Construction workers is pretty poor and quite entertaining.
We both had a bit of a trek on the train to get there not fun at 5.30! So we tended to sleep on the train journey a lot. But to be honest it was cool because you got to see a beautiful sun rise on the way there and you quite often saw dolphins jumping out of the water too. Which is a bit different to what we used to see travelling on the A1. Then on the way home the sun would set over the beach which was really nice too. So not too much more to say on the work front...I am sure you get the jist, but we did both meet some cool people and had a few good nights out!
A lot of our time in Perth was just spent chilling Mon-Thurs and then the weekends were filled with drinks, food and checking out other bits of the city. We were supposed to be saving but that didn't happen much. Its hard not to drink when your in a hostel because your meeting new people all the time and the bars were right on our door step-not to mention when we got the hot tub in or had bonfires in the hostel courtyard. But hey we had lots of fun. We had a few days out too which I'll tell you a little about.
Fun times in Freo
Whats the most fun you can have in the dark? Thats right... Laser Quaser! It was so much fun, lots of us went, John and I were on seperate teams and clearly my team won each game. Well it was pretty even to be honest and John beat me by a little bit, okay a lot, my scores actually stated "don't join the army'. Clearly its because I would be a killing machine! John was a bit more hardcore and went to Paint Ball as well with work, he had a wicked day and only had a few bruises to show for it!
On a slightly more grown up note we went on a bush walk to the Mundaring Weir. This was a really good day out too, its basically a big damn with loads of nice scenery. So we all went ploughing through the bushes, climbed some rocks and then chilled out with a picnic. We also played with the frisby (John is the worst frisby player in the world- seriously you wouldn't think it is possible to play this bad) and hide and seek which was heaps of fun and then at the end of hard day we all headed to this lush pub in the forest for a well earned pint!
So what do you do on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon in Perth- head to the botanic gardens for a picnic I hear you say. Well thats what we intended to do, but everyone decided it would be a good idea to stop at the bottle shop en route for a "couple" of drinks. It was obvious this day was going to be messy when everyone had cracked open a drink in Vaughans trooper on the way out of the bottle shop. Oh on that note I feel it necessary to tell you that Australia has drive through bottle shops and they will happily open you a bottle and give it to you whilst you are driving out! Is that not the craziest thing ever??? So anyway off we went to Kings Park and played drunken rounders. This was the best day, it was absolutely hillarious, people falling over and lots of shouting. So the next Sunday we headed to Freo park to play it again- of course with drinks again! Just to ensure we weren't going to get arrested/ or perhaps more importantly fined we asked Vaughan if we would be alright drinking in a publlic place and he just said it doesnt matter just try to keep it hidden. He also squeezes way to many people in the trooper and tells us to play ignorant- alright not a big deal, but not what you would expect for a Detective Inspector! This day was really good as well. Both nights we all rolled back in and changed into our swim wear and jumped into the hot tub. The hot tub is a story in itself- it was in the courtyard of the hostel so you jumped in and were freezing. The first week we got it everyone got really drunk and people were getting thrown in in their clothes. This resulted in the loss of our phone. Everyone just squeezed in and was singing we had a wicked night even though there was about 10 people too many in the hot tub.
We also went indoor rock climbing, which was cool. A real workout and quite tough. Basically while one person climbs up the other feeds the rope through to them and pulls it away so they wont fall and hit the floor. I kept doing this wrong and John would fall for a few inches before his harness snapped into place- which gave him a little shock each time!
So all in all we had an excellent couple of months in Perth and were both a little nervous to leave as we were pretty comfortable. But it was time to hit the road again and go try some new stuff! Our next plans were to go work on some organic farms for a little while, go do some fruit picking type work in margaret River and then head to Melbourne for some more city life!!!
