We flew to Edinburgh early in the morning on Friday. After finding our way to our flat, we dropped off our bags and headed off to King Arthur's Seat a top of the tallest ridge in Edinburgh. It was a steep incline, but it did not take us too long to reach the top of the ridge. Once we made it to the top the sun finally joined us and we took advantage of the weather with a fun photo-shoot. The flowers along the edge of the hill spread across the green grass like a fire. It was so beautiful.
Back down the hill we went to the Royal Palace. The royal baby and family were staying there at the time so we did not tour the inside. From there we hiked the Royal Mile which leads all the way up to Edinburgh Castle. Along the way we stopped for a delicious lunch. Ashley and David even tried some of their first fish and chips.
On the Royal Mile we stopped at a St. Giles' Cathedral. Just as we walked in, the chorus began singing; it was mesmerizing. Leaving the cathedral was a heart laid in brick on the court yard. Apparently, by spitting on the heart you are given good luck.
We finished the Royal Mile walk up to Edinburgh Castle. We did not tour the castle, because it was too expensive, but we snapped a few pictures from the outside. We were so exhausted from the early morning plane ride that we decided to take a nap in Prince's Park. Reenergized, we went down to the grass market for dinner. We found a fun little pub that had live music playing. We spent most of the evening playing cards and drinking there while listening to the band play.
The next morning we headed out of town to Fife, to play mini-golf. It was a great time and beautiful weather! Coming back into town we came across a festival that was happening in the park put on by a whisky brand in town. David and John tried to win a prize by kicking leather soccer balls at two targets. David was closest, but we missed out on the prize. Just behind the competition was a mud soccer match going on. It was hilarious to watch. The crowd even felt some of the action when the players would dive or kick our way the mud flew over the fence spraying us. We did however win a prize at the wellie throwing contest. Basically, we had to throw rain boots about 20 feet and land them on or close to a hay bail. We each won a prize, but both of the ladies took first place winning the whisky glasses.
Later that afternoon, Erin and John went on a ghost tour through town and ended in the underground vaults of Edinburgh. Though we did not see anything too unusual, we both experienced chills, and learned a lot about the haunted past of Edinburgh. John got pulled up to the front of one of the vaults to volunteer for one of the ghost stories. It was nerve racking, but he only had to dance to lighten the mood of one of the stories.
We met for dinner at the oldest bar in Edinburgh. It was a lot of fun! We went on to an outdoor pub where we met a lot of fun people. There was a big boxing match on the giant screen outside where we got to watch with the rest of the crazy crowd.
The next day Erin and John went back out to Arthur's Seat to enjoy the warm sun. We climbed even higher than the other day. The sights were unbelievable! We met back up with Ashley and David to go to Camera Obscura. Camera Obscura has 6 floors of optical illusions. It was very trippy and a great time.
The weekend was a blast and we all loved Edinburgh. It was a wonderful trip with Ashley and David!
