Erica's travels through Eastern Europe and Russia
Tallinn, Estonia - things are happening quite quick at the moment! Got into town around 04.45 and a little tired and queazy, but made it to the hostel where I slept on the kitchen sofa... yeah the kitchen sofa. Its a bit like camping, but with better hair and white pants. My kinda camping =)
Currently, Im sitting down for a moment at the National Library of Estonia, where there was just a very boisterous choir outside apparently singing Estonian national songs in the face of a Russian monument. According to the information and ticket booth representatives, yesterday a group of Russians came to the monument and sang a national song with old Red Russian flags. Well this didnt go over well with the Estonians, and one could slice the tension with a butter knife! There were a few police present, along with ;caution; tape to dampen tense feelings.
Meanwhile, accross the street a happy couple tied the knot in front of a Russian and Estonian flag. Imagine on one side fighting, abeit quietly and non agressively, against `the Russians` and on the other, marrying one! As you can tell, when your friends and/or lovers, hubands, wives, aunts, uncles are Russian it makes `independence`, and furthermore, nationalism, all the more complicated.
In any case, Tallinn is a beautiful town with churches and buslting market places around nearly every corner. The problem is that about 90% of all the people in Tallinns Old Town seem to be tourists - like me! Germans, Spaniards, Italians, French, Japanese, you name it!
Well the good news is things are very cheap at the supermarket. I still plan on leaving tonight at 23.40 to get into St. Petersburg tomorrow at 08.10, but I havent heard back yet from the Program Coordinator of my program (problem)! Oh well, works comes to worse I can book a hostel for the night!
Cant wait till Russia!
