After a six hour bus journey from Melaka, we arrived in Singapore and walked to our hostel. Singapore is really expensive and so we had to take a dorm room which was still 8quid something! It was a bit daunting for me as the room was filled with men, most of them over 35 and I was the only female but I had to get over that one pretty quickly. On the day that we arrived we just wandered around the streets admiring all the tall buildings and trying to remember not to jay walk (crossing the road at a random spot instead of at a crossing) as it's illegal there and carries a pretty hefty fine.
The next day we went to check out the infamous Singapore Zoo which did not disappoint! In fact it was bloody awesome! The animals aren't kept in cages (on the whole) and most of them are separated from you by a moat. They have so many cool animals there including white tigers, polar bears and white rhinos. We were like children looking around it as they have put a lot of effort in to making it all look as natural as possible and it really was ace. We watched the lions, polar bears, zebras, rhinos and tigers being fed too. The polar bears were given a melon to eat which the youngest one (17years old and weighing over 700kg) made it look effortless to break open. A live fish was also released in to the water for them to hunt but unfortunately they weren't interested. We also went and watched a show put on by the elephants which demonstrated how elephants are used in logging, their strength is incredible! They had also been taught a few cheeky tricks to get a laugh from the crowd, like stealing the keeper's hat. There were also some really cool monkeys there of which I can not remember the precise name but they looked almost human when they were swimming which was a bit freaky to watch as it reminds you how close we are to them. Steve Irwin had helped the zoo to build their Australia enclosure which had kangaroos which you could go and feed, there were lots of giddy little children around that area! Anyone on a visit to Singapore should definitely put the zoo on their list of things to do as it's a great day and it's only 7 quid to get in and that includes all of the shows.
The next day we got on the mrt to Chinatown which was very pretty if not a little too pristine. A trip to Raffles was a must and so off went to look like proper tourists and have our photo taken outside. We then went to check out the gift shop where the cheapest thing you could buy was a facecloth for 4 quid! Dean was looking at some very expensive gold elephants when the shop assisstant walked over to him and said, "the ones over there are cheaper sir"!! Dean was very offended. Unfortunately we couldn't afford a Singapore Sling either. We then walked around Singapore, headed to the waterfront and waited for spongebob squarepants to make an appearance. He was there for the day to meet and greet with Patrick! We then went to a very cool shopping centre which had lots of bubble like structures on the outside of it... very postmodern ;) In the evening we had a nice cheap curry in Little India where I made the mistake of eating my very sweet rice pudding with the rest of my dinner, the waiter found this very funny but to be honest it tasted better mixed with curry!
