Today we left windy Wellington behind to catch the ferry to Picton, on the South Island. Tim had told me how scenic the journey is (and you would hope so as it takes four hours!) but unfortunately, our views were somewhat obscured by heavy rain and low clouds. It did clear up a little as we entered the Marlborough Sounds so we could at least go out on deck for the arrival into Picton.
We are staying at Waikawa Bay Holiday Park for two nights, just 10 minutes away from the centre of Picton, although there's not much to see in Picton itself. Having had some awesome adventures in North Island, we're pretty excited to experience some of the south! Everyone seems to say that South Island is the more exciting, wild and scenic island. It is certainly more mountainous which suits me of course!
Impressions so far? Miserable weather! We arrived at the campsite at around 6pm and had time for a very wet trail run out towards the sounds before dinner.
