Today we decided to go to Melbourne Zoo - which claims to be the oldest zoo in Australia, so we thought it couldn't be missed.
As it was set to be another scorching hot day we walked through Royal Park to the zoo. We arrived at the zoo at about 10:30 and spent over four and a half hours here - what a day!
We began with Pigmy hippos, Gorrillas, Mandrills (these are baboon sized monkeys with blue/purple faces and bums) and a vast array of other monkeys from around the world. We saw Lovebirds, and loads of other ducks and birds that we didn't note the names of. We then saw what we think must be the largest elephant in the world - a massive African elephant, but as he was being put to bed we didn't get a photo. We did however, manage to get photos of his little friends, 4 female elephants from Thailand.
We made our way to the Orangutan enclosure where one orangutan had an old red jumper which he kept wrapping himself up in, to keep out of the sun.
We saw lots of other animals on the way to the wombats, where Emma walked through a replica wombat tunnel - in the pitch black!!
We saw many big cats, including jaguar, puma and snow leopard, unfortunately they weren't doing much as it was sooo hot! We made our way across the walk way above the lion enclosure, which were more active than the other big cats, making plenty of noise. We saw big brown bears, the giant tortoise and the extremely cute meerkats. We saw penguins and seals, red pandas and even a tree kangaroo.
This was a great day and we would recommend it to anyone who visits Melbourne.
Lots of Love,
xxxx Lee and Emma xxxx
