So now the time has come for the final blog of our journey. It's been an amazing adventure that we've been lucky enough to share and we've made so many memories along the way.
It's felt like a holiday these past two weeks in America and we've been so busy everyday! We spent valentines day at Disneyland California Adventure Park which was awesome! We were getting withdrawal symptoms from Disney so jumped at the chance to go! It was a cross between all of the Florida parks, they'd taken the best rides from each and put them altogether in one place. The evening show was called 'World of Color' and they projected the show onto water which was pretty cool, but nothing can beat some good old Disney fireworks!
The next day we did some celebrity stalking and took a tour of the movie stars homes around Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, Mullholland drive etc. We saw so many houses including Halle Berry, Ringo Starr, Simon Cowell, the Osbournes, Katy Perry and the house where Michael Jackson died. There were loads more but I won't list them all as we'd be here all day! Our tour tickets included free tickets into Madame Tussaud's so after we'd finished celebrity stalking, we went in there and pretended we were walking the red carpet with them. Later that evening, we drove down to Venice beach and Santa Monica. As it was night time by the time we got there, everything at Venice had closed and it was like a ghetto. We didn't like it at all so only stayed there for a little while before moving on to Santa Monica. It was much nicer there with the shops on third street and street entertainment. We also walked along to the pier and it was just how you would imagine an American funfair to be.
After a typical american breakfast in Denny's, we began the road trip to VEGAS BABY! The drive wasn't anything to shout about although the mountains looked quite cool in the desert. We were lucky enough to be treated to a few nights in the Encore hotel by Sams mum and dad so we checked into our room and it was absolutely huge! There was a control panel by the side of the bed that opened the curtains, turned on the lights and everything. Very futuristic! We didn't do a lot for the rest of the evening as we were both quite tired so like the rock 'n' roll kids that we are, we had McDonalds and went to bed.
The next couple of days in Vegas mostly consisted of walking around all of he hotels. We couldn't believe how big they are, it's like another world when you walk in there and we did get a little lost a couple of times in some of them. We had a lovely meal in the hotel one night and the next night went to see the Cirque du Soleil show, Mystere which was absolutely incredible. They make it look so easy, like running up a pole is something everyone does day to day! Being on the tight budget that we are, it only meant we were able to bet a grand total of $12 on the machines...and lost.
Sadly, it was soon time to check out of our luxury hotel and go back to the reality of smelly hostels. We stopped off in Hollywood on the way back from Vegas the first night on the way to San Francisco, then somewhere called Pismo Beach. Finally, we arrived in San Francisco. As we were driving to the hostel, I didn't really like the look of it. The streets looked really dodgy, I felt like we were in another ghetto. When we arrived at the hostel though, they showed us a map and marked a little square off saying that they don't advise guests to go down those roads as that's the homeless area...sure enough, they were the roads the sat nav had taken us down!
After dropping our bags off, we drove to Lombard Street. We couldn't believe how steep the road was! And then we came to 'Crookedest Street' which winds backwards and forwards going down the hill. I can't imagine there ever being anything like that at home. We parked up along Lombard Street then walked down to Fishermans Wharf for a little while. We kind of wish we were staying nearer to the wharf as our hostel was a bit out of the way in junkie land.
We had three days in San Francisco and they were all mostly spent down at Fisherman's Wharf. The first day we walked the length of the piers, stopping at pier 39 to watch the sea lions, then going to Boudin Bakery for a taste sensation - soup in a sourdough bread bowl. Yumtastic!! The next day we hired bikes and cycled from the wharf to the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge and back. It was a lot more tiring than it looked! And just our luck, when we got to the bridge, a big cloud of fog came over and completely covered the bridge so we couldn't get any nice pictures like we planned. It was also absolutely freezing once we got on the bridge, we needed scarves, hats, gloves, the works, so once we reached the end, we turned around and came back. After dropping the bikes off, we decided to treat ourselves after a 14 mile bike ride so went to Ghiradelli Square and got ice cream sundaes and hot chocolate. Our eyes were bigger than our bellies though and we barely finished them!
That night, we were in our dorm room and a rather strange American checked into the room. He seemed a bit tipsy and after dropping his bags off, said he was going out for a drink. Within half an hour (if that) he was back and absolutely off his face, barely able to stand. I think his drinks came with a side of a little something else! Off he went again and over the course of a couple of hours he was popping in and out at various stages of drunkness. At around 1am, everyone was in bed when the door opened and the light was turned on. In came the man followed by someone from the hostel and two police officers. He was being thrown out for inappropriate behaviour! I can't say we were surprised. Apparently, Sam said I was a bit of a b**** as I told the police officer which bags were his. He was taking his sweet time just standing there though and I wanted to go back to sleep...he just needed a bit of a kick up the bum to help him on his way! Who am I to pervert the course of justice?!
Anyway, after an eventful night we had to check out of the hostel. We made our final trip down to Fishermans Wharf, this time to get a boat over to Alcatraz. We did the audio tour around the prison and it was so interesting. Very strange to think that we were in an actual prison where actual prisoners used to be! We saw all the cells including the ones where the prisoners broke out from, the control room, dining room etc. Something I hadn't thought of or realised was that people used to live on the island. It makes sense really, as all the prison guards would have had families so there was a small village like place where they lived. On the day that we were there, there was a lady the bookshop signing her books of Alcatraz and it turns out she is the daughter of the warden who was on duty in 1962 when some of the prisoners escaped.
Once we'd escaped from Alcatraz ourselves, we walked to Pier 39 one last time and had our last soup in a bread bowl, before making our way back towards LA. We stopped over in Pismo Beach again and continued our journey to LA the next day.
After checking into the motel, we decided to go to Hollywood Boulevard again. When we got there, a chunk of the road outside the Dolby Theatre was closed off as they are getting ready for the Oscars on Sunday. We saw the big Oscar statue all covered in plastic and also the red carpet all rolled up, ready to go. So when we watch the Oscars, we will be 'those guys' saying 'we've been there, we saw that!'
Yesterday we drove to Venice and Santa Monica again, but this time during the day. Venice was slightly better as the shops were all open this time, but it's still a dump. Santa Monica was still good though and we spent a bit of time wandering around and having lunch. It was then back to the motel and time to make sure we were all packed ready for our return home.
So today we visited Hollywood for the last time. They've made more progress on setting up for the Oscars and had even rolled out the red carpet for us!
And that brings us to now. We've checked in at LAX airport and are about to eat a pizza. The last meal of our travels. It's very strange thinking that when we step off the plane in 11, 12 hours, however long the flight is, that we'll be at home and our families will be waiting on the other side of the gate for us!
As I said at the beginning, it's been an amazing journey with lots of ups and a couple of downs, but we've loved every minute of it. We've seen and done things we never thought we would and feel very lucky to have been able to do so.
So now all that's left to say is, thanks for reading and see you all in a few hours!
