Vietnam done!! It was such a great couple of weeks, it wasn't as busy and jam-packed as India and Nepal, but it was nice see the differences between the towns. The North is very different to the South still, I don't think there is still a divide but the South is much more modern and generally nicer!! Saigon was a really lovely city, surpriseing that it's not actually the capital. The streets are lined with trees and there are lots of green spaces, and it's quite clean too.
We really enjoyed our day trip down to the Mekong Delta last Monday. We only went to My Tho and Ben Tre which are the two closest areas to Saigon. It was definitely the most touristy thing we've done so far though, there was a coach load of us that went. families and older people so we had to traipse around with everyone which was fine for a day. You really get the sense that the Delta is enormous when you're on thelong tail boats. Some of the rivers were so wide and looked more like lakes and then we went down some tiny little rivers in punting boats. On the smaller ones there were mangroves and reeds and palm trees everywhere and it was sooo peaceful! There was just four to a boat and there was a lady punting us along in her pointy straw hat..got some great photos!! Throughout the day we went to a place where they make coconut candy, which wasn't very nice at all! We then went to where they make honey, and we got to try some with hot water. When we were all sitting down three ladies sang traditional Vietnamese songs whilst 5 men played the instruments..it was cool but not sure Simon Cowell would approve..it's very nasal and whiney lol! It would've been good to see more of the Delta but it was fantastic to see!
On Tuesday we travelled to Phnom Penh in Cambodia so we had to cross the boarder too. That was quite a funny experience. We were the only Westerners on the bus so we didn't really have a clue what was going on, and we had to listen to Vietnamese music for 6 hours..not good!!! At the boarder crossing there was just two guys stamping all of the passports and we seemed to have to wait until the end as we had British passports. The guy had a fag in his mouth while he was doing it and was shouting at people all the time lol! We then had to get our temperature measured before we could get in to Cambodia!!! Very odd haha!!
When we got to Phnom Penh we just found somewhere near to the bus stop to stay as we were getting a 7am bus to Sihanoukville the next morning. Two hours in to the jouney we realised that we had left our passports at the hotel as they take them to look after for you, and so we had a major panic as you can imagine. The bus stopped soon after we realised and so we asked if we could borrow this lady's mobile as we had no signal and after about 5 attempts we got the right number for the hotel. We rang in a fluster but they were so chilled out about it and just said "Oh yeah that's fine we'll keep them in the safe for you until you come back", so that was panic over luckily!! The reeeally lucky thing is that Phnom Penh is somwhere we are actually going back to after Sihanoukville, so we'll pick them up tomorrow!!
For the last 6 days we've just been chilling out on the beach which has been sooo nice! The beach we're staying on is the main one to go to, but there's a lot of rubbish everywhere which really spoils it. On our first day on the beach we were surrounding by about 5 girls all wanting us to buy bracelets and have a massage etc. They were such lovely girls, but they have obviously been learning to tricks of how to get people talking so that they buy something. This little girl called Jam who was 6 made me a couple of bracelets and then her older sister threaded my underarms and eyebows! They taught me how to do it later in the week too! They all go to school in the mornings which is $20 a month and then work on the beach all afternoon, which seems so sad, but they seem really happy, always laughing and being cheeky. After a couple of days we kind of learnt how to chat to them without having to buy something, so we ending up everyday just talking to them for a bit being taught how to make all of the differnt kinds of bracelets.
Today we went to a beach just around the headland called Otres beach which was much less rubbishy and really quiet so that was nice. We met up with the Watford guys yesterday and had a nice evening with them getting a BBQ and drinks on the beach, and we'll probably go around Phnom Penh altoghter too which will be really nice. So apart from getting my bag stolen on our second day it's been great to just relax for a few days, and it is a beautiful part of the world. You just have to embrace all the kids on the beach and laugh with them, and avoid the rubbishy parts.
We've both loved the beach but we're really looking forward to getting going again and exploring Cambodia a bit more... Phnom Penh and Siem Reap :)!!
