After yet another early wake up in order start our journey to Flores in Guatamala we almost missed our boat due to our stomach's constant need for food! As we hurried back to the dock with food in hands we had to laugh as the captain was on his bike about to come an look for us. The journey took 6hrs sat at the back of a sweltering mini bus with three guys from New York who literally sat on our laps and would not shut up.
We arrived in Flores and settled into what seemed like luxury with only a few animals in our room (one being a lizard) and the glass from the window missing in the bathroom- with the odd builder peering through. But our room had a balcony overlooking a beautiful lake and we had a bed each- all for only £4.50 per night.
Later we had to dodge a torrential tropical storm as we were caught offgaurd without our rain macs. We became slightly alarmed on hearing gun shots which appeared to be getting nearer to us, so we headed into the first restaurant- a big mistake (the pasta with tomato sauce we ordered turned out to be a filthy bowl of tomato soup with the odd piece of pasta).
The next morning we set off to explore Flores, heading out on a small wooden boat around the lake. Our driver, Carlos, gave us a tour in spanish- Liz translating but making up the parts she didn't understand- to see the surrounding small beautiful untouched islands. Hearing the gunshots yet again on the boat we questioned our driver who revealed it was church security preventing people stealing statues of Jesus.
Returning to the mainland we stumbled across a nice pizza restaurant overlooking the lake. However this was ruined after two extremely 'raa' (POSH) travellers decided to join us. We struggled to contain our laughter when they told us their names were 'Humphrey' and 'Archie' who went to Eton and Radley. (The next day we found out that they had told some other people we had met, that we were their sisters!) We rushed off to do a canopy tour (zip wiring between trees) in a nearby forest. However, Emma suffered vertigo sapping the enjoyment from the activity- although she still claims it was from the antimalarial tablets we are taking. Returning feeling slightly sick, we sat on our balcony making the most of our luxurious hostel!
In the evening we experienced some local culture participating in a procession and tasting la comida tipica! Our day came to an end after having a few drinks at a bar with our New York friends (or whom we thought were our friends...).
