After 2hours painful waiting we stood eagerly awaiting the lost case by the terminal entrance. We were kept entertained by various Belizian 'characters' including a grey haired rustafarian wearing a jamaican beany hat, dread locked black beard, farmers shirt, Bob Marley trousers and black knee-high wellies! After the bag not appearing and discussions with American Airlines we discovered that the bag had in fact been flown to Boston not Belize. They told us it would arrive the next day -( yeah right!!!) So after a few of Liz's tears and Emma's positive support we decided to continue our journey to Caye Caulker by water taxi.
Our first dinner gave us the pleasure of selecting the exact fish we would watch be barbecued for us to devour. Here we befriended our first local, 'Nigel' who obviously thought we were close enough from that moment on to call us 'baby'. (uccchhh!)
After a 5.30 am wake up- not by choice but due to jet lag- we found ourselves having a continental breakfast at Amory's Cafe. We spent the rest of the day exploring the tiny island by golf cart - a unique experience. We came across the airstrip with smiles on our faces and hope in our hearts that Liz's luggage might somehow have landed here - but surprisingly it had not! We then stumbled across a scrapyard and picked up the famous 'Tyrel Tyrique', an 8year old who became our local tour guide. After teaching us a local Belizian song we were alarmed when he slapped Liz hard on the back whilst she was at the wheel. After he explained this was due to a mosquitoes presence from that moment on he became our personal mozzy swatter. Although he was rather more concerned for Liz's welfare allowing Emma to accumulate many bites including one on her face!
It only took us 20minutes to drive around the whole island at the carts top speed of 10miles an hour. After such a strenuous journey we found 'Lazy Lizard' - a beach bar with tables in the sea. At only 11am we enjoyed pina coladas with listening to background reggae music. Jumping back into our golf cart we realised we were drink driving however the lack of traffic (ie. No cars!) made us feel safe.
A phone call to American Airlines revealed that Liz's luggage had landed in Belize an would be on a water taxi for us to collect. - PANIC OVER! We were spotted numerous times driving up and down the 3only streets on the island which resulted in locals thinking we were lost and mad.
We sat on the beach to enjoy the sunset but were frequently bullied out of our spot by stray dogs walking over us. The time came to return our golf cart but the rental shop was mysteriously shut. Two guys claimed they worked there and tried to convince us to hand the cart over to them. Realising this wasn't the wisest idea we instead sensibly decided to leave the golf cart switched off but with the key still in the ignition outside the shop.
A great start to our adventures and a relief to be reunited with Liz's luggage!
