I actually woke up without a hangover today! :) we started our day with a third reich walking tour - it was all about the rise and fall of power for the Hitler-Nazi regime! It was so incredibly interesting! We started where the rise to power started for Hitler - Reichstag (The Berlin parliament). Hitler was meant to be aborted by his Mother however instead of coming out of the clinic without a baby she came out with Adolf! Adolf was from Austria and always lived Germany. After WW1 Germany hit complete poverty with families living in the streets and parks, food was very scarce and with Germany having to pay reparations there dollar was next to nothing! There economy was appalling which resulted in massive inflation! More money was printed and old bills were reprinted with a higher value! A billion dollars couldn't even buy a loaf of bread! There is images of civilians walking down the street with wheelbarrows of money and it was worth nothing!! We then walked to the Brandenburg gate - on top there was a monument stolen from France that is situated on the top! During WW1 when the walls were surrounding Berlin the walls were on either side of the gate and neither east or west could get to it! During the bombing of Berlin the gate and one other Nazi building were the only remaining standing buildings! Everywhere you look in Berlin you know that during the bombings would have been up in flames! Behind the gate was the hotel where Michael Jackson dangled his child! I got a photo! Ha ha. We then walked to a carpark in a set of apartment blocks, which was once upon a time Hitlers bunker! Hitler was claustrophobic so he hated being down there! He was in his bunker for 2 months before Germany lost the war. He always said that he didn't need to get married because Germany was his wife, but in the last few days of Hitlers life he married his long time girlfriend and only the next afternoon he killed himself taking cyanide! Soliders were made to carry cyanide tablets and if defeated or taken in by opposing forces they were to take their pill! After the bombing of Berlin the Russians came in and found the remains of Hitlers body! After he had killed himself his colleagues took his body and burnt it. I have no idea how the Russians found his body and dental records after the whole city had been on fire!! We walked along through the city and ended at check point Charlie - there were several of these located along the wall. To get from east to west you needed to pass through the checkpoints. We were told a storyabiut a man who lived on the east and his girlfriend lived on the west. Everyday he would go and visit her when one day he asked her to move to the east - of course her application was denied. One day when he was going to visit his girlfriend a man got stuck under the gate. He then realised that if he had a low enough car he could drive straight under, so he quietly walked up to the gate measuring the height. He went around town to the car dealerships and bought a sports car! He crossed over in to the west and picked his girlfriend and her mother up, hid them in the car and sped through the checkpoint! He couldn't look up because he would have been shot, but it happened so quickly that the guards would have been like "car quickly approaching, car running through the checkpoint, car gone!" ha ha! The story went world wide and a man read the article in a small Italian newspaper who was in the same situation! Only two weeks later he tried the same thing and was as equally successful! This was very embarrassing as thus was meant to be the best guarded border in the world, so they rebuilt it and no one ever attempted to sneak in again! After our tour we went to a chocolate shop - you could make your own chocolate!! Simon and I had a white chocolate cake - it was amazing! I bought some
Chocolate to bring home for the family! We then went to the lowenbrau beer hall (since munchen was an epic fail!) for lunch with a group from topdeck! After lunch the boys separated and went to the Olympic stadium and the girls and I went to the topography of terrors museum - it was really interesting! We then walked back towards our hostel stopping at monuments and taking photos! I bought a piece of the Berlin wall for my memory box! The weather is crazy over here. One minute it is hot and sunny and in another it's cold and raining! We got caught out on our walk home and had to catch the tram back! Tonight we had our bar crawl! In Europe you can drunk anywhere - it's crazy! We went through 5 clubs ending around the corner from our hostel! We had such a big night!! Shots are only 1.50€ and shots in drinks aren't measured they just fill half the glass with liquor and the other with mixer! I've resulted to beer as it is so much cheaper and I don't end up too drunk because I actually know how much I'm drinking!
