Port Macquarie
Wednesday 8th December - Friday 10th December 2010
G-Day! (I tried to resist but I'm bored with 'Hello!")
We got the bus to Port Macquarie on another nice day and drove through Urunga and Nambucca Heads. These places look exactly like they could be in The Lake District. There is water everywhere and water sports and fishing are both very popular. The scenery is of hills and creeks, although there has been flooding here due to La Nina so I'm not sure if there usually so much water!
We arrive at the bus stop and once again, there is a bus from the hostel there to pick us up. We are staying at "Port Macquarie Backpackers" (very original!) and it's a cool joint! It has graffiti on the walls everywhere, a snooker table with no pockets and they play the bed lottery! It's not as seedy as it sounds; basically, each bed has a number and if your number is drawn out of the hat, you stay for free! Needless to say, we didn't win! He does not accept Goon into the hostel however, topless sun bathing and smoking weed is actively encouraged! We wandered into the town which appears to be even rougher than Coffs! We stumbled into an Irish bar and left immediately after. There were young girls being preyed upon by old men and it felt like it could kick of at any second! We eventually found somewhere to eat as we had no shopping and arrived late and we saw our first Christmas tree!
The next day we walked to the beaches and did the board walks through the mangroves. The coast is beautiful. It's really hilly and green with palm trees alongside pine trees and little coves and creeks everywhere. It's very pretty but once again, there's not so much going on.
We had to get up really early the next day to get the 6:15am Greyhound to Sydney. We got there half an hour early and the bus was half an hour late so we sat around, absolutely wrecked for an hour! But the bus ride wasn't too bad and we arrived in Sydney later that day…
Love as always,
Elle and Joe x x x
