We awoke at 7am and packed up our room as we were planning to drive down to Hung's Homestay by the Mekong River in Can Tho. After packing up all of our belongings we wandered down the street to find some breakfast, I'm not accustomed to having a proper meal at breakfast, usually just fruit and yoghurt or toast so I wanted to find somewhere that made 'breakfasty' food. We found a Mexican place that offered bacon and eggs on toast, coffee, omelets and the works and decided to have breakfast there, afterwards we realised that it's probably best to eat whatever the locals are eating because they know how to cook it and actually, its so delicious…so that's what I'll be doing tomorrow morning. At 9am we got into our car and after being reassured that the driver knew where he was going we headed off. Three hours into the trip we stopped…and the driver got out…to get directions…now after this had happened a few times and after driving in what seemed like circles mum decided to call the English speaking man from the homestay and asked him to pick us up…turns out we were only five minutes away. After settling in, we decided to borrow some bikes and have a look around. This area was a lot more poverty stricken than Saigon, most people were farmers and lived in little shacks by the river with little paths in between, we followed these paths and Hung, the man who's homestay we were staying in took us for a tour, teaching us how the huts are made, and the process of how rice is grown and dried (they dry rice on the tar or the side of the road before removing the husks and sending it to shops to be eaten), he showed us mango trees, banana trees, jak fruit trees, pineapple shrubs, pepper bushes and wound us through the streets pointing out businesses and things that the locals like to do. All in all this was probably a 15-20km bike ride and the hot, humid weather was beginning to hit us so we headed home back to the homestay and tried to Skype back home, egh, nothing here works 100%, especially the Wi-Fi so that was a bit interesting..
The food here is absolutely delicious, we've had rice of all sorts, fried noodles with every kind of vegie, curries, dumplings and bowls of cabbage and other vegetables. We're all taking on the challenge of eating with chopsticks, although every now and then we are offered western cutlery when it is obvious we're struggling…soup is a challenge.
