I am writing this from an internet café in St Petersburg whilst listening to a D&B show on 1xtra so this blog may not follow that logically…
After a mad last night in a reggae club in Warsaw we walked not unlike the living dead to the station having not slept. As you can imagine as soon as we got on the train we went to sleep only to wake up and find we had missed our connecting train(which the WASTE ticket man in Warsaw had failed to tell us about) an were stranded in Sawulki until the following day. For those of you who don't know the exact location of this town; which I presume is everyone Sawulki is a bleak concrete jungle about 50km from the Polish-Lithuanian border. This was not part of our vaguely mapped out plan so we spent about three hours trying to hitch out with no luck. A local girl who had seen our fruitless attempts to hitch offered us some help. The girl who turned out to be called Laura got her cousin Rafat to drive us to a local church so that we could ask for a place to stay. The priest was giving a service and so Laura's mum very kindly said we could stay at their flat. Rafat then got his friend round and the night continued with much drinking of polish vodka and munching of polish food. It was decided by Rafat that we should be shown some local sights in the middle of the night. So with polish techno blazing and feeling a bit bleary headed we sped off to have a look at a church! Very surreal
In the morning feeling worse for wear we did a bit of Laura's English homework, brought her mum some flowers to say thank you and caught the train which we had missed 24 hours previously.
After another close call with a train change we arrived in Vilnius just ahead of dusk, finding a hostel only a few minutes walk from the station. It had beds stacked two high which you had to get in long ways not unlike the pod beds in Japanese airports.
