Welcome one and all, to the first entry of my South-East Asia travel blog. I will be doing weekly updates, and I hope I can peak your interest in travel and the various endeavours I engage in. I will aim to make my blog entries short and sweet, with a few interesting photos/video clips for your enjoyment. Happy reading!
I arrived in Singapore today after possibly the most boring 7 hrs of my life.. not helped by the fact that I had held high hopes for the flight. Even my fave TV shows couldn't hold my interest. The last couple of hours I talked to an Aussie who recently moved to Singapore, and I got some good advice re where to go/what to do.
After arriving at Changi International and finding my way outside I caught the train to Chinatown, where my hostel is located. From the very first, I felt like I was in Asia - humidity and atmosphere that reminded me greatly of Indonesia, and people of many cultures. In Chinatown in the heat I did a few laps trying to find my hostel. Apparently "everyone in Singapore speaks English" does not apply in Chinatown. Also, it's a good idea to have the address handy when searching..
My hostel is like a kindergarten or the set of Play School - bright walls and teddies everywhere. That said, it's very new, clean, comfortable, cool and I can understand the reptionist :P After a beautifully cold shower I went out for a walk through Chinatown to see the sights and taste the foods. It is a lovely place to be in - especially with all the Chinese New Year decorations up. I haven't found the 'No durians' key ring I want yet, but I did have some great food, including cockle fried rice noodles and a longan crushed ice drink :)
Can't wait for the next few days - Singpore Zoo, Universal Studios, Underwater World, Southern Islands, Little India and back to back malls and street stalls :)
See you all next week from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia :D
