Australia!!!!!
Last time we blogged it was the day before our Oz adventure began and what better way to waste away the hours of anticipation than heading for the zoo. Which, as zoo's go, was one of the best that we have been to.
Excitiment was running high as we arrived at the airport for our flight, with conversation being dominated by what films we would watch. However, this was short lived when we found out that we had been placed on a jetstar flight (we think because there were not enough people for our quantas flight) which is like booking British Airways and finding yourself on Ryanair. Although we were given free food and drink through out the flight we were told we would have to pay if we were to watch the movies, to are dismay.
We arrived in Cairns at around 9 a.m. local time and headed straight for the hostel. After an afternoon catching up on sleep it was time for us to experience "the Goon" for the first time. The night became quite a blur as a result but it was up early the next morning to get our first glimpse of the sun and aquanted with Cairns. It wasn't long before we saw some familiar faces from uni, Jo and Angus, and arranged to meet up to go on a road trip together following a waterfall trail.
After a couple of days of sunbathing and drinking we were up early for our road trip with hangovers in toe! Highlights of the tour included the waterfall that was used for peter andres famous video Mysterious Girl and also the waterfall used in herbal essence adverts.
When the day arrived for us to depart we were up early ready to catch the 7.30 a.m coach down to Mission Beach. Without much knowledge of the place we found Mission Beach to be quite a quiet town all though we had turned up on the busiest night of the week where the club/cafe had about 40 people in it!! Although this seemed to be the perfect place for some people (adam) to get a bit carried away with the amount of wine that they were drinking!! What Mission beach lacked in the night it made up for in the day as one of the best places to do skydiving and white water rafting in Australia. We decided to indulge in some skydiving. We went for the highest possible at 14,000 ft but for a short time it looked as if we would be unable to as a storm broke out and they had to delay the dive, which just built the tension. You can only describe skydiving as insane with an adrenaline rush that makes you want to get back in the plane and do another jump. The freefall was approx 10000 ft travelling at nearly 200km an hour and took around a minute but felt like seconds.
Next on the itinary was Magnetic Island where we stayed at Bungalow Bay. Attached to the hostel was a Kaola Santuary, where we were able to take a tour and hold some animals including a crocodile. The island is listed on the world heritage sight and when you are there you can see why with great beaches and amazing wildlife. As night fell we found ourselves at the second full moon party of our travels. Slightly different from the first as majority of it was indoors out of sight from the full moon. But still a good night was had by all.
We are currently in Airlie Beach where we have booked ourselves on a 2 day sailing trip around the Whitsundays.
Till next time.
