I've come here to see the ruins. Some claim it is the best preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranian. in its heyday 250000people live here and it was all about Artemis. They built the biggest temple in the world to Artemis here and it became one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The walk pout there was pretty easy and they say the distance between top and bottom gate is 3km but it didn't feel that far. I started at the bottom and worked my way up, against the traffic, then came down again. Really they have excavated the main street and a few buildings, or parts of them, either side. It is becoming expected now they put up small bits of something then stand back and go " that will give you some idea what it was like." Having said that Celcus Library was probably the most amazing structure I have ever seen. It was amazing. The work in the stone at the entrance was amazing. And it should have been, it was the third biggest library in the world after Pergamum and Alexandria.
On the way back I stopped to see the Temple of Artemis. Wellllll why bother? When it was built there was 127 columns supporting it and now there is one in a dirty swamp. They say there was some excavation done and they have re buried it for later. I don't know about that but right now you need a great imagination to see one of the Wonders of the World.
This arvo I went for a walk through town and some guys were cooking Turkish donuts and giving them away. I managed a bag and they were really nice. Score.
Tomorrow I having a lazy day then the day after on the bus again to Pamukkale.
