We found a spanish school and a family to live with. The mother, Jenny, was very nice and taught us a good deal of spanish (at least we think). We saw most of the things to see in Arequipa- including a museum where they keep a frozen mummy. She was sacrificed by the Inkas only 11 years old, She was burried on the top of a mountain where the low temperature had preservated her untill some archeologists found her.Now she´s in a glass freezer on display...strange.
We then packed our stuff and left for the worlds deepest canyon-the colca canyon. First day early morning we descended 1 km into the canyon, came to a Oasis with nothing but palms trees, bamboo huts and 4 swimming pools...we took a swim but wanted to go further up on the other side of the canyon. We crossed the river at the bottom and started walking uphill when the sun was at it´s highest...finally we reached Malata (70 houses) were the owner served us crema de mais (typical food here), potatoes with tuna and herbs and afterwards chicha (spit fermented corn beer..........). Then we came to the smallest town in the wolrd- San Juan de Chucho. The trail was so beautiful, at one point we just followed the water channels, then we ran into Victor and we asked him if he knew any place to stay, he said yes and then we stayed at his "hostal". This was the real Oasis, he went fishing and we had trucha (oerred) for dinner...
We are now in Cusco, waiting for Marias stomach to be back in shape and then we will soon be on our way to Machu Picchu.
Anders og Maria logging out.
