Our time in Kuala Lumpur was short but sweet. We arrived early in the morning and were greeted with the hustle and bustle of a busy cosmopolitan city, which was something unbeknown to us, which we greatly missed. Whilst there isn't a lot of thing to do here you can't deny that a nights stay here is nevertheless enjoyable. After collecting our bags we stopped off for a cheeky McDonald's, which after a month of rice and noodles is more than justifiable. We then boarded the express bus to KL Sentral train station, from which we got the metro to our hostel. Located just around the corner from Chinatown, we stayed at Suzies Guesthouse, and whilst we were greeted to a box room with a bunk bed and nothing else - a little different to what we had become accustomed to in Vietnam, it gave us a roof over our heads, which sufficed. Since half the day had already passed we decided to spend the remainder wandering around sampling the delicious Indian cuisine which Chinatown had to offer (we didn't quite understand that either) and checking out the beautiful architecture around. The markets in Chinatown are quite something, offering everything from watches, headphones to designer handbags and if you can handle being constantly harassed whilst window shopping then I recommend checking this place out. We discovered a tasty drink made of honey and lime which was undeniably refreshing and it provided a nice alternative to the usual bottle of water. We headed back to our luxurious abode as we had had the grand total of 4 hours of sleep and treated ourselves to an early night. Asleep by 9.40 oh how very rock and roll. What made matters worse was that I had a head cold coming on (which made our flight somewhat uncomfortable) and so I popped a few paracetamols before bed, hoping they would resolve any bugs before I woke up again. Little did I know, or at least think about it in that moment, was that these paracetamols contained caffeine. So despite my good intentions before long it was 1am and I was doing jumping jacks in our box room, desperate to fall back asleep.
We had been told by our friends Lexi and Jess that if you wanted to go up the Petronas Towers you needed to queue up first thing in the morning. So we found ourselves awake again at 6am which was rather painful especially after my midnight workout. We arrived at the towers by 8am and were greeted by a handful of people who equally were of the same opinion. Whether it was necessary or not (as people arriving around 9am still managed to get tickets - bare in mind it was Sunday and this would have been a contributing factor) we got our tickets and were the first group up. Kuala Lumpur first thing in the morning is just as beautiful as it last thing at night and whilst it was a little cloudy the view was still spectacular. Adam had a bit of a freak out given his fear of heights but I soon managed to persuade him to pose next to the glass window. We also met a lovely Malaysian couple who gave us loads of tips on Malaysia, and helped us out by taking the standard couple pictures for us. Unexpectedly, they then took a picture of us on their Polaroid camera, giving us our very own retro souvenir of the day.
Once our allotted time was up we headed back to the streets, grabbing some grilled chicken en route, and wandered over to the KL Sky Tower. Whilst we didn't decide to head up and check out the view, as we figured it would be very much the same as the Petronas Towers, we nevertheless popped inside, watched a delightful video on how the communication tower was built, and relished in some cheeky free air con.
After realising that there wasn't much else which we wanted to see in Kuala Lumpur we decided to bring our trip to the Perhentian Islands a day sooner and headed off to China Town to grab a cheeky few souvenirs before heading towards the bus station to board out overnight bus. In true Adam and Danni style we ended up running late after encountering some issues with the cash machines (FYI the Perhentian Islands don't have any cash machines on the island) and we caught the bus with a few minutes to spare. Naturally this meant Adam disappeared in search for food whilst I died on the bus step whilst trying to salvage my flip flip which broke during our frantic run to the station. I say run it was more like a waddle with the backpacks weighing us down but we made it. Thank god we have 10 days if relaxation ahead of us!
