Well it's been almost 2 days of planes and airports but I have finally arrived in Cuzco. The flight via Sydney and Auckland was uneventful and we arrived in Santiago, Chile. The first humorous moment occurred when they called out plane to board. Around 40 of us were on one side of a locked glass door and couldn't get to the departure gate, although we could see it. No amount of waving or banging on the glass could arouse anybody's attention. I think when they began to realise that the passenger count was fairly low that they started to search for their "missing" passengers. After that, boarding proceeded smoothly and we were on our way to Lima. As my flight to Cuzco wasn't until 10. 45am the next morning I had elected to stay in a small B&B near the airport. One of the cosiest rooms I have ever been in. 2m x 2m, the single bed only just fitted. But it was comfortable and I managed about 10 hours sleep. Next morning I was picked up by Arturo, my taxi driver, and was at the airport in no time. After 3 gate changes we finally got to board and were in Cuzco about an hour later. From the air the Andes are stunning. Never ending ridges and valleys, crisscrossed by winding tracks with little villages dotted everywhere. Taking it easy since I arrived, getting used to the 3300m altitude. Have had a short stroll around the nearby area but will explore it in more detail tomorrow. It looks like a fascinating place, steeped in history.
