Today we are heading to Puebla, about a 2 hour bus ride away. The breakfast search is easy today as its a work day. Fresh orange juice, rock melon with muesli and a sweet honey like substance and a couple of pastries from the bakery. Our mini bus arrived and we soon discovered the side door didn't work so we all clambered in through the back followed by our luggage. Short and uneventful ride to the bus station. Mexico continues to surprise. The bus station was large, very modern, clean and more like a large railway station or a small airport. Our luggage tagged and loaded, us X rayed and a pat down, and we were on board and on our way. The bus was apparently a 1st Class one. On board movies in English, toilet, seats that reclined more than an aircraft and a very smooth ride on a good freeway. Apparently there are 50 bus services per day between Mexico City and Puebla. We arrived in Puebla about 2 hours later and I could not believe the size of the bus station and the number of buses parked in "departure bays". Simply amazing. Our hotel is the San Angel and as usual virtually in the heart of town. A short walking tour and then lunch. Today I had Moles which are a specialty of this region. Sort of like corn tortillas with fillings. There were 3 with each having a different sauce over them including a chocolate and chilli version. Washed down with a Corona mixed with lime juice in a glass with salt encrusted around the rim. Different but pretty good. Might have to introduce it back home. We then walked into the main plaza (and no surprises there is a cathedral fronting the plaza - but more about that later)and on through some artesian markets. Pretty warm day so a few of us stopped at a bar for a couple of cold stubbies. 2 for about $2.25 was just too good a deal to pass up. That night 5 of us headed out to dinner. Traditional Mexican restaurant with live music. Afterwards we strolled back through town and into the plaza. Despite it being Monday night and lateish there was an incredible number of people in the plaza. Its easy to understand why. Puebla is a beautiful city by day and night. Another place with a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. And the locals seem to make the most of it. Mexico is proving to be so much more and so much better than I had expected.
