We arrived in Suchitoto about 7pm. Quick check in and head out to a street stall, about the only thing open, for a dinner of papusas. Its like a soft tortilla with fillings of cheese, spinach, pork or beans or a combination of these. They are good but bloody hot, but on the flip side the beers are bloody cold. Next morning we head to the market for brekky. I grab a freshly squeezed fruit juice and some fresh fruit and on the way back to the hotel find a great little bakery and pick up a freshly baked fruit muffin. This morning we are doing a tour of some sights around Suchitoto. Our guide Renee is very passionate about his city and his country. First stop is some dry waterfalls but the highlight are the basalt columns that form them. Very unusual and quite spectacular. Next stop is a shop that deals in indigo products. This was once a major source of income in this part of the country but has now pretty much died out. It is very expensive to produce and hence products which are dyed with it are also expensive. A small wall hanging that I quite like is US$3,000. A bit much for this little bunny. And then onto a local cigar making outfit. It is run by a 96 year old women from her house. They are nothing like Cuban cigars and only purchased by locals. We then have a walk through the streets and Renee explains much of the history of Suchitoto. It was one of the few towns that was not destroyed during the guerrrilla war in the 1990's. I spent the afternoon just wandering the streets. Its a small place so I pretty much covered the main areas. A common theme was that many of the shops were protected by an iron cage inside the building. You can't select what you wanted off the shelves, you have to ask the shopkeeper to bring it to you. I guess its a throwback to the days when El Salvador was racked by violence. Bullet holes are still visible in many buildings. Ended up back at the hotel and found a nice spot on the balcony to enjoy a few cold beers until the group arrived back from their afternoon outing.
