Doug's Diary
Last three days have been difficult, it seems really quiet, I walk around town, I rarely see any brits, some Japs and Germans. Bumped into one Brit at a restaurant last night, I entered as he just finished his dinner, chatted for about 20 minutes. Haven't seen a single teenager or youngster / thought it may be cos I have been staying in fairly good accommodation. So in this town, i'm in the cheapest hotels, 100 baht per night (1.40 gbp), has a rock-hard old bed, a small wooden chair and a noisy ceiling fan! The last town wasn't very interesting, millions of temples but after about 10 the enthuisism wans. Same with this town so I'm only staying tonight and moving on to Chaing Mai, which is much more of a tourist place, might go on an organised hill-tribe trek.
Tried to book a flight to New Zealand but the internet is so slow that it keeps dropping out, will try to find a travel agent in Chiang Mai.
The thais are polite, they only bother you in the tourist places when trying to sell something but leave you alone quickly. The weather is hot, all-day long inc mornings, evening and night. Very noisy and a bit dirty with lots of cars, motorbike, tuk-tuks, scooters etc. Transport has been fairly easy... an glad to be british when it comes to travel, as many of the signs are in thai and english. They have a different alphabet so its impossible to translate thai into english and vice-versa, so giving a taxi driver something written in english is pointless. Ordinary thai's keep their distance and help if asked but don't go out of their way, like the Brits and most other nationalities. Am hopeful CHaing Mai will be better and I think I will enjoy a trek, the trip would be 100 percentage better if there was someone to share it with but is still going ok. Trouble is that as I don't drink alcohol, it's difficult to go into a bar and make friends in the evening. Anyhow, lets see whats happens next...be good. D
