Journey Home
HI there guys. Well seeing as everything i have put on here has been short i thought i would take an hour out of the sun and give you an update.
We are on day 28 of our tour and things are going really well. The first few days we did our first game park in our truck. It was a really good start to the holiday. Within minutes of being in the park we saw some wildlife. There was loads of buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, gazelles, impala and baboons etc. There was alot to take in and cameras were going wild! You keep taking photos of the same thing but you cant help yourself! We had our first night camping and it was something to get used to. Alot of noise in the night and nowhere to pee! In the morning we were told to keep an eye on the food, sure enough no one was looking and a baboon stole our bread! Probably wasn't a bad thing as it was mouldy anyway.
After a bit of driving we were in Jinja in Uganda. Neil did his first white water rafting. Not many people from our group wanted to do it but there was a few. You get to watch the video that night and see how you went. Rather funny to watch. The guy guiding Neils boat gave up on them a few times and threw the paddle in the air so he could hold onto the boat. They all had a good day and it was talked about for hours! I did my bit and painted a school and it was a hard days work!!!
After that we went to see the Gorillas. We were told it could be a bit of a trek and we were all getting a bit nervous. After and hour of not to hard walking we were told they weren't far away. We left our bags and walking sticks and headed off around the corner. About 20meters later i see Neil (who was at the front of the line) getting out the camera. They were sitting right on the path. It was amazing. The whole family turned up, 18 in total. The guy thinks that in the last few days the alpha male , there were 2 silver backs, had changed. They didn't do alot, sitting around and eatting but they were watching us as much as we were watching them. One Black back got rather close to us but nothing bad happened. We were on a bit of a high that day as they were amazing to see and we couldn't belive how easy they were to find! The other group wasn't to lucky the had a hard walk but they did find them.
After that we were off to the Masai Mara. We left the truck behind and all went in different cars. This was our second game drive but some other peoples first. While here the only 'new' thing we saw was alot of elephants and hippos. It is amazing to watch these animals they just dont seem to care that you are there. We got to see a lion pretty close up, and he ever got jiggy with his girl! That was the highlight for some people! We had two days at the masai mara and it was good the see the animals but by the end it was good to have a break!
Back to Nairobi after that for the 3rd time. We were getting a little sick of this place. We then headed down into Tanzania and into the serengeti. The plan was to go for a ballon ride however someone took our spot by paying cash up front (at least thats what our tour guide said). The good thing was that we went on another game drive and had a great experience with a leopard. It jumped out of the tree it was in and came right up to our truck. It hung around for ages and we got a very good look at it and some good photos. The serengeti was a special place and unlike most other places in the world. A bit like central Australia only with lots of animals. Another high light was a cheater with 4 cubs that were all feasting on a fresh kill.
Zanzibar was our next major stop. We travelled all day to Dara Salam and then headed over the next day. Thats were we are now. So far we have spent a lot of time on the beach taking in the sun and making sure we sample plenty of seafood and cocktails. Yesterday we went snorkling and sailing and are both burnt to a crisp. Hope that this gives you some idea of what we have been up to. Its been hard to find an opportunity to update the page as the internet access has been so slow its not usuable. Please send us emails or leave a message on this page as its always good to hear from you guys and find out the gossip.
