Friday 2 May
Here we go again. We took the road for Kuranda instead of the sky rail road and ended up half way up before realising, so carried on. We are at a canny height along winding roads in the rainforest. Just passed a sign "beware Emu's crossing" and just passed the Barron River.......
At last, - located in the middle of the World Heritage Rainforest, 1000 ft above Cairns, the traditional home of the Djabugay people. The Kuranda lifestyle prompted a hippy invasion in the 60's. It has a market selling art and crafts. I can just imagine the hippies here. Today It's pretty quiet, maybe because the train isn't running. We seen them working on the railway due to a small landslide. We seen koalas, how cute, Paul held one, they sleep for at least 22 hours a day. We seen and fed the wallaby's and Kangeroo's, seen fresh water crocodiles, snakes, lizards and wombats. Seen the Barron river and the Barron falls and took many photo's. it is wet season December to March and dry season from April but the water was still flowing, beautiful it was. We seen a lot of what looked like turkey's wondering about and seen these at Mossman too.
(They are actually Brush Turkey's - not sure if you can have them for Xmas lunch though).
The sky rail return is 73 aus dollars return each or 50 dollars one way. One way via train and the other via sky rail is about 150 dollars each. it takes 1.5 hrs via sky rail stopping off at the two stations up to Kurandu.
