Didn't really see much in Aqaba but truth be told there's newt much to see. We headed off to Wadi Rum mid morning in the car. Once we turned right off the King's Highway towards Wadi Rum it felt like a scene from a wild wild west movie, absolutely spectacular landscapes. Long roads that went straight for miles and miles, didn't see any tumbleweeds though.
We managed to get a good price on a jeep tour and 1 night stay in Bedouin camp. The driver was a bit of a tit always trying to rush us around but we'd just do things at our own pace & leisure which wound him up even more. We saw the majority of the attractions which included Lawrence Springs halfway up a mountain and a massive dune that myself & the 2 Canadian guys belted it down running, felt like was a child again joyfully blissfully playing :) THe tour ended around 2 in the afternoon so we decided to hike out on our own which was really cool just going up random mountains that we wanted to go up. Lost my wooly hat up there somewhere but had lots of fun. We watched an awesome sunset from the sand dunes and unsuccessfully tried to start a fire before heading back to camp in the dusk. After food which was cooked in the ground and Bedouin entertainment and electricity switched completely off at 9pm, we chilled with the BEdouins until midnight. We then wrapped up in blankets as the temperature had dropped drastically and headed to the top of the dunes in the camp facing the main desert and led down on our backs watching the stars. We couldn't get a wifi signal out there as was trying to find out the specific time of a meteor shower. We managed to still see half a dozen meteors nonetheless. Wadi Rum is for sure the best place been to so far, moonlike landscapes, serene & tranquil, you become one with nature, its simply magical and magnificent.
The next morning after breakfast we headed straight over to Petra. We got there around lunchtime and had some food with the Canadian guys which felt like a last supper as they were heading further up north to Amman. Mid afternoon we said our goodbyes to the Canadians, it was great to meet such nice guys so early on in the trip. Notice that I've been using the word we not I. This is because in Jordan been travelling throughout with a 57 year old Korean lady! She's nuts & crackers, has random outbursts but a giraffe, sometimesa. She makes me laugh because everything she does is by the book.. or the info she got in Korea before coming out here.. literally every hostel and restauant she goes to is from her 'info' there's no leeway. I just smile and do my own thing, no book or info just go with the flow or with people I meet.. :) Wanted to go to Petra to see the sunset but got told closes early in winter time so not worth it. Instead took advantge of free wifi in probably one of the best views will ever use my laptop until it was too cold to stay outdoors.
WOke up at the crack of dawn next day and headed down to Petra at 7. Walking through the siq felt like Indian Jones except wasn't on a horse, it was real good as there weren't that many people at that time. When got my first glimpse of the infamous treasury I was speechless it really was a wow effect. It was real good taking pics there and seeing people come through the siq and seeing their first reaction also. The rest of Petra is vast and visually vibrant, the weather was a bit cloudy but luckily it didn't rain and the clouds added extra character I think. It was a physically exhausting day walking hiking and bit of climbing until about 4pm, this is with near dead legs from Wadi Rum the previous day!! I got to say Petra is by far my favourite wonder thus far. The Colosseum and Pyramids are man made (well the latter is debatable) however even though Petra is man made the carvings are into the rocks thus it has a more natural earthy feel to it. Loved it. In the evening at the hostel we watched, appropriately, Indiana Jones & the Last Crusdade all waiting for the final scenes in Petra!!
Next morning it was raining which is no bloody goods but fortunately on a bus to the capital Amman. Journey was quite quick and slept most of it due to being excessively tired from last few days exertions. Got to the Hotel and had to climb countless stairs to the bloody top.. just what the doctor ordered with aching legs, not! Had Jordanian breakfast at popular place across the road, thats even been graced by the King himself (not Elvis you fools hehe), consisting of fuul and falafel. Even though shattered headed off out exploring Amman with a more chilled taxi driver compared to Mahmood, think Kameel was stoned constantly but at least felt a lot safer than going around Cairo haha. The Citadel is very impressive with a 360 degree panoramic view of Amman and the city has a lot of Roman influence with temples and an ampitheatre so it kinda feels like home from home. Another resemblance with Roma is the multiple hills here which Amman was originally built on 7 like Rome but now spreads across 20 of them. When its prayer time was up at the Citadel and multiple mosques were playing the same prayer, it felt like dolby surround sound! The early morning prayer however at 5am is a pain in the ass! Kameel took me around Amman at night fer free which was cool, I'm staying downtown in the old, poor part of town so seeing the more opulent side was real good. The difference in how the other half live. Downtown shisha & coffee no more than a couple of quid, up by the posh cafes n bars exactly same thing 25 squids!? Its all about being seen in the hip, trendy places if your rich here. I like the contrast between Cairo & Amman, Cairo is full of culture & character whereas Amman is a lot calmer and chic also.
The Dead sea was, pardon the pun, dead good. It started off real quiet, was amazed no one on the beach.. That's when I jinxed myself, literally 20 mins after my fb status update, coach fulls of Palastines arrived. It felt like a scene from Sausage Fest part deuxcent, Palastine edition, not cool!! THe best way to describe the Dead seas is lying on a lilo without a lilo lol. Effortlessly floating, I blissfully floated away onto the next beach which wasn't suppossed to do but I fell asleep hehe.. Was woken up by a policeman whistling me to get back onto the correct segment of the beach ;) It was well lush just floating around for aeons. The Dead sea is well known for its products that help skincare etc so when in Rome.. we covered ourselves fully in mud and let it dry for 10+ minutes. Skin afterwards was smoother than a baby's arse. The trip back to Amman was weird as we left the scorching heat of the Dead Sea only to be greeted by dark clouds and rain in Amman.. for one minute thought was back in bloody Blackburn.. until looked down and saw swimshorts & flip flops on and mud remains! ;)
My brief trip in the Middle East is coming to a conclusion but I've had such an amazing time. I cannot recommend Jordan highly enough, its got so much to offer and there's still plenty of other things would love to do here. Easyjet fly to Amman now.. get on it.. Will upload pictures later today.. check them out as Jordan is quity simply stunning.
