The last couple of weeks have been mucho loco to say the least.. from a full body and bag scan at Cali airport (must look like a dodgy geeza) to landing at Quito airport where I shat a brick as didn't realize the airport was slap bang in the middle of the city centre..!
Quito itself was nicer than anticipated, went around town with a top geeza that reminded me of a cross between Mr Bean and Kevin & Perry, top giraffe!! The teleferico was ear poppingly good ascending 1300 metres from the city to the top at 4100m with great panoramic views. The historic centre was boodiful with classic and colourful buildings to boot. Went to Mitad del Mundo only to realise after that the monument took pics at was 200metres further along the flaming actual line, doh!
International flights are real expensive in South America thus had to bite the bullet and get buses all the way from Quito.. 70+ hours later my arse was more than peeved off with me.. even moreso that the one night off a bus I spent 3+ hours in the movie theatre watching the new Batman which was a bargain entry of less than 2 quid!! It was great to watch a good film after some of the Spanish dubbed shoite served up on the buses however...
Arrived at Wild Rover in La Paz absolutely frazzled but dazzled by the bright lights coming into the city from high above at El Alto. Ended up at the bar till closing time after bumping into friends from previous adventures in Chile & Peru which was cool to catchup and the next couple of nights were even messier still, reminded me of Vang Vieng to an extent, minus the tubing of course! Catching the Cholitas wrestling on the Sunday was an uber cheesy hangover cure. Had to make a choice between Death Road mountain biking and Lake Titicaca, chose the latter as 1 it was cheaper and 2 my ass still hadn't forgiven me for the above bus journeys.. Had fun en route to Copacabana proving my identity as didn't have passport with me.. Isola del Sol was well worth it, stunning and perfect sunny day on the lago.
Went down to Sucre with a good friend and subsequently discovered Karl Pilkington lookalike, felt like a Wild Rover reunion as there were lots of us in the same hostel which was fun! Sucre itself is a pretty city in which all the buildings in the centre must be painted white, giving it a southern European feel! We walked up to the mirador for stunning sunset views before heading to a local club where a fashion parade was taking place and to get to the bar we had to walk on the red carpet?! The local market was my favourite place for hangover remedies from the freshly squeezed juices to the chorizo and meat sarnies and cheap goats cheese, all of the aforementioned less then one english pound! Small coke bottles were 1 boliviano which worked out less than 10p!! El parque cretacico was great fun seeing the dinosaur footprints but of course the highlight for us was seeing the dino vagina!! ;)
The bus journey from Sucre to Villazon was a mare however but luckily the roads were open again after been closed off due to local politics bulls*** for nearly a week. My bus seat was broken and the bumpy Bolivian roads meant that was hopping up and down and backwards and forwards all night long.. trying to read a bloody book was impossible! To make matters worse had a crazy old Bolivian next to me that kept tapping me everytime was nearly dozing off wtf! Walking across the border was dodgy as funk at 7am with dark streets and seedy discos still thriving but made it to Argentina!
