After a delicious discovery of coconut jam, we are heading for a scenic walk and to discover what Dumaguete has to offer. We head straight down to the promenade-Rizal boulevard which boarders this vibrant city ,We notice the streets are far cleaner than previous cities visited .The promenade is very western in the grand scheme of things,It reminds Jade of a typical British seaside. We bimble slowly up the promenade, the waves crashing against the walls, the port is over flowing with ferries and all kinds of different fishing craft. Now making our way into the heart of the city, we reach The church and bell tower, which the city is based around. There are so many sudents here, it seems to be a lot wealthier too, we go on to find out that Dumaguete has one of the top universities in the country, I just couldn't believe the name of it..... Sillimans University, It has the highest pass rate also in the philippines.I can only guess that Dumaguete is thriving off the wealth of these students which drives the economics of this city, and has turned it into a fun and exciting place to live.We now head to one of our local haunts,Robinsons mall, which is just an airconditioned shopping haven. We love this place, it sells our favourite treat the piaya, which can only be described as sweet potato filled eccles cake without the raisin in it, any way they are bloody scrumptious. We head to the food court to get some lunch only to discover en route there is a 5 screen cinema and guess what had just been realesed , yep you guessed it,Twilight breaking dawn. Jades eyes light up even brighter than they already are , we both decide on going to watch the film after lunch. Now with the lunch Devoured we head to cinema armed with every snack imaginable ! sat safely in our seats , the place is a riot to say the least, Kids are running around , people crunching their snacks, playing with phones,Its something you have to experience. The film was great and we head back to harolds mansion on a trike.... next stop, a bus expedition to Cebu.
Dumaguete to Cebu We get to the bus terminal in Dumaguete. Our giant a/c bus is here , we get on and pay the conductor, Jade has got her hand bagged full with squeezy cheese and biscuits for the 6 hr journey ahead of us! The bus has to board a ferry so we can get across to the Island of Cebu, Jade and I disembark the bus and sit on the open deck of the Ferry, we take our seats and the Ferry sets sail. We can both hear something quite strange... some high pitched squealing? I get up and venture to the front of the ferry, and look down on the cargo, there is truck full with pigs , they were packed inlike sardines , although i have never seen a tin of sardines as packed as this truck!! It was absolutely shocking, the pigs were stamping on each other, some were being crushed. Jade managed a quick view before having to look away , this was truely disturbing, the Noise of the squeeling pigs were horrendous. Jade and I safely back on the bus and Ceby City inbound, we get our heads down for a short while, Jade now starting to feel travel sick. We arrive at Cebu City at 3ish and are both starving , A short taxi ride and we are back at the familiar cebu guest house, only this time we are paying for the "budget room". (I'll explain why it's "budget" later on!!) Bags dumped down, showers have been had. We head to get some delish grub from robinsons mall and head back. Jade sits reading yet another book and I'm outside... She starts freaking out about something touching her arm but I think she's imagining things. Then again later she says she can see something running around the room.... I think she's started to go mad!! I do hate it when she's right but the room is "budget" because we are sharing it with some furry little friends... nice. After covering every hole in the walls and reassuring Jade that it will NOT eat all of her clothes by the morning, We get another early night as we are absolutley shattered from the days travelling.
The next morning we go in search of more air conditioned areas... and so head to uptown Cebu. After a pleasant and really short walk, we arrive at Ayala mall, it is monstrous. Jade and I could see shops as far as the eye could see, we were dwarved by this towering mall and even shopoholic Jade didnt know where to start. Therefore we started at the food hall ! Worryingly, I think the Philippines is making us lose our spice-buds as I ordered beef dumplings and they almost blew our heads off ! Instead of try to make our way through this maze we decide to move on to another mall up the road... SM Mall... this is even bigger!!! We can't believe what a difference uptown is to downtown; no slums here, the buildings are bigger (some are actually made out of bricks and not recycled metal) and people are more fashionable, It is far more western and gave us an enjoyable day out but we came to the Philippines to see their culture and, if I'm honest, I saw this a lot better when we were on Colon Street.
Getting ready to leave the Philippines, we are both a little sad. The people here are the most friendly of any we've ever met, without exception, and know how difficult it is going to be to live up to this amazing adventure. But on the up side, our next stop is BANGKOK and I'm exciting Jade by dancing around naked, at 5am to the chess classic "one night in Bangkok".... bring on the next part of our journey.
