First weekend on the islands. I dont know how other weekends are going to beat it really, it was awesome.
on Saturday Elouise, my housemate, and myself went to a place called ´Tortuga Bay´on the island were staying on. After an hour and a half of walking a never ending narrow path we arrived. An epic scene upon arrival; huge waves were crashing against the shore and the tide was looked very strong. We walked further down the beach and just round a corner was a calm lagoon which looked like paradise, just going to show how diverse the climate is...2 minutes and its changed from choppy to tranquil. I decided to go for a swim in the bay, as it looked so iniviting. We spotted that we could hire kayaks to explore the lagoon, so why not!?
We went all round the outside of the waters and spotted a kingfisher and some jumping fish. Upon arriving back to shore, there was suddenly lots of movement below the tiny boat. Easily about half a dozen sharks were below us, swimming in 1.5m water and exploring the mangroves around the sides of the lagoon. They were white tip reef sharks and were around 1m-2m in length, I was completely fascinated/scared! As they were at the bottom of the water pictures were pretty much impossible but I captured a bit on video. They were so close to the beach! In the waters I had jus gone swimming in...it made my day!
Saturday night we made friends with a few locals, one who was a waitress and kept giving us lots and lots of free ´cana´ shots which were horribly strong.
Sunday was my first outing to explore other islands...Seymour and Baltra. Bird lovers would of loved Seymour as there was endless nests of Blue footed boobies and other wierd looking avian species. They all had newly born chicks and yet were so happy with us coming face to face with them. They were just noisey and curious. To get to the island, we had to drop anchor near some cliffs and get a motor boat to a more accesible area. As soon as the boat stopped moving guess what was below us, darting around and under the boat...bloody sharks! 3m Galapagos sharks. I was, again, captivated...but so carful getting in and out of the motor boat as I did not want to fall in.
The other island we saw had turtle nests but no turtles, but gave us a good chance to snorkell around some rocks. I gave it ago, even after seeing what I had seen earlier that day. Saw some wierd tiger striped fish who liked to follow me, and some schools of sardines. Nothing amazing, but my imagination still played tricks on me and I had to control my breathing.
In the evening I had 3 people round my house (Alaskan,Californian and Equadorian), as Elouise had left and I had a 3 story house all to myself. I taught them all ´ride the bus´ and ring of fire.
