Another stunning week here on the islands. Sooo much to talk about.
The house I am staying in has been very busy this week. A spanish family of females are staying, plus an Australian Volunteer is staying and Lots of conservation volunteers from another island crashed here at the weekend whilst visiting the island. The house was full. Throughout the week the spanish women (and very young girl) have become very fond of me, god knows why. They all discuss me in grest detail at the dinner table (in spanish) and all took individual pictures with me. I got told that I look like Prince William, that I should lock my bedroom door at night, something about castration and that they all want to teach me to dance. They left sunday and made me a nice bracelet for being such a good sport.
The people from the conservation project were very (urhhh) interesting, a girl from London called Nikki who was very funny. Wish she stayed longer as I really got on with her and shared her sense of humour. An Italian bloke called Giovhani, who didnt help with the Ialian stereotype ´What do you drink´´Wine´´And if theres no Wine´...´Coffee!´. He managed to distract some of the female attention, which was a relief. There was a crazy posh Malasian lady who was pretty blunt and demanding...but hilarious. And a Scottish girl who didnt explore ther island as she was completely sunburnt and just rested. I asked her ´Did you get sunstroke?´´No I just got badly sunburnt, I dont think theres a name for that´´Urrr Scottish....?´- She didn´t get my humour.
During the week I saw alot of the kids eat these packs of fresh fruit sticks from stalls outside the school. So I thought I would try some. I bought a packet for $0.50 and was asked if i wanted to put salt on it...embracing the culture I sprinkled it lightly on. What I then tasted was the most foulest, horrid thing ever! It tasted like concentrated Hate! It was vinigery, sour and tough. and the salt just made it worse! but a spanish lady at the homestay said it was nice so I gave them too her. Everytime she took a bite she winced, but coninued to eat...surely thats not a face of enjoyment.
Without thinking, I tought the kids the word ´Gay´ this week, so now they are continuously pointing to their friends and shouting GAY!
I tried to teach my German friends the definition of ´Banter´, turns out they dont get it. Most of them have left to explore more of South America now, so my main group of amigo´s have depleted.
I also have a very embaressing toilet-based story, but thats not one for this blog.
The island I visited this weekend was Bartholome, and it was soooo incredible. It embodied all that is Galapagos. The landscape immitates the surface of the moon, with different bodies of water surrounding it. The breathtaking views are used to advertise the tranquility and uniqueness of these islands. With one beach swarming with sharks (1m-2m) which are happy to swim around your ankles, as they feed around the shore. And another coast dedicated to colourful schools of fish. Whilst I explored the depths, I was so excited to experience swimming with PENGUINS!!! The Galapagos Penguin is only 25cm tall and very cute. I followed my new little friend as he swam and bleated. He went and found his female companion, what happened next could be considered ´Penguin Porn´. I captured it on video, and now just need David Attenborough for a voice over.
Another rare occurance we experienced: on the way there I saw movement in the dinstant waters, something jumping in and out of the sea a long way away. Only me and 2 others spotted it before it stopped. Was it a Dolphin? an Orca? Just a lost Sea Lion? Well on the way back the same thing happened, only it was about 5 metres from the boat and everyone saw. It was a sting ray jumping out of the water and performing some amazing acrobatics. No pictures as it was over as quickly as it began...but very impressive and rarely seen.
I could go on for hours, and I am sure I will when I return.
