Saturday.
I went on a trip to Floreana, the first Island to be populated as it has a natural spring. It was also very popular with pirates back in the day. The group I went with was a majority of young lads and a few older folk. On our way there we passed some dolphins going in the opposte direction, so the meeting was pretty brief. When we arrived the small port was full of little heads bobbing in and out of the water, marine turtles. An on the rocks, there were some much more colourful iguanas sunbathing. The guide wanted us to go to the highlands of the mountain to see some labyrinths and wild land tortoises, plus to take in the amazing views. To get to the top we had to use an ancient rickety bus. The guide said something in spanish to everyone and the spanish lads all jumped onto the roof rack area, the two swiss guys joined them....I thought that I best grab a space up there because is must be fun and have better views. Well, they hadnt gotten round to creating any sort of roads on this island and the bus had to take lots of steep climbs, jolty corners and go over large rocks on the path. ´Hillarious Agony´ is the only way I can descibe the next 15 minutes (which is how long it took a spanish guy to yell at the driver to stop so we could all get down). It turned into a contest you see, as no one wanted to be the first person to wimp out of being flung around and banging into eachother/ the metal sides, but it was such a relief when someone did. It gave us all something to talk/laugh about though, and the views WERE far better up there...but never again.
After being led through collaped lava tunnels which had become a tall maze of rock, and saying hello to some huge turtles...we went back down (on the inside of the bus) and got shown around the island by boat. We visited a penguin cove and snorkeled about a kilometer or so, saw a huge manta ray and penguin dashing around the sea trying to grab some lunch. Then onto a wierd rock formation called ´the devils crown´ which is where a pod of doplhins were actually going so they joined our boat on their journey for a good 10 minutes, sooo much fun to watch. And after that...home. I told all the guys on the trip about a big ´fiesta de halloween´which was going down that night.
I arrived back to a new volunteer staying at the house with me, a German called Tina. She was vegetarian so didnt join us at dinner, but she should have just for entertainment. It was only me, my hostess and her friend Maria (who helpfully translates). The chicken tasted sweet and so I asked if she had put pinapple juice in the sauce? she said no and showed me a bottle of whisky, as she had put a dash of that in. I smelt the whisky and (becuase I dont like to be wrong) I lied and said ´Yeh, thats a special type of sweet whisky´. My hostess thought that sounded nice and so decided to have a shot, it wasnt sweet and her face was a picture...which made Maria (a 52 year old dignified lady) spit her food out all over the table with laughter! I explained I was going to a Halloween Party as my hostess left the table. 5 minutes later I yelled thanks and good night before heading to my room, but ofcourse she was hiding in the dark outside her house with a coat over her head...shouting BOO and scaring the living poop out of me!
I taught a spanish friend and the new German volunteer ´Touchcup´which they just couldnt grasp and so had to drink ALOT. Then we went to the party with some Argentinian girls. Out of the guys from the tour earlier that day, 4 of them actually turned up to meet me, which was cool. lots of beer and shots were had, costume contests entered and fire dancing to watch. My humour was lost on some: They ask´What did you come as then?´I replied ´A rapist´. Two girls called me Edward all night and told me I must have come as that twilight vampire guy. Only bad thing is the music suuuucked (some repetitive live drum music) so everyone got to miss out on my fantastic drunken dancing!
